If you are super in to film making and independent films, this is probably a great event for you to attend. A weekend pass starts at $50 and gets you in to all of the films, all weekend long. However, if you don't want to go all out, you can also purchase tickets to individual screenings at The Palladium and The Birmingham 8.
Tonight has 2 of the highlights of the weekend. At 8 p.m. is the "Detroit Music Video Awards". This is a compilation videos of local musicians' that are nominated for the Detroit Music Awards. The actual awards ceremony is April 27th at The Fillmore. This is a fun little preview though. The film is only an hour long, which means you are out just in time to catch the official Michigan premier of "Machine Gun Preacher". This movie was made in Michigan and Africa last year. It had a limited release in cities across the globe, but was never officially released in Michigan. A couple of weeks ago, it did show up at the cheepy theatre in Warren. It's stay there was short lived though. So, if you want to see this movie on the big screen, this might be your first and last chance!
Another film showing this weekend that had quite the buzz, is "Mooz-lum". This movie did come out a while ago, but a lot of people were talking about it when it came out. So it might be work checking out. It is showing Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at The Birmingham 8.
Those are the films that stuck out on the list for me. I'm sure there are tons of other great shorts and features showing. You can check out the entire schedule here. The weekend is all leading up to the 3nd Annual Michigan Film Awards Ceremony at 9:30 on Saturday night. However, each night there are after parties at What Crepe (Birmingham), South Bar and Barrio. So if you are feeling fancy or feeling artsy, this might be a fun weekend to head out to Birmingham! Who knows, maybe you'll even run in to a celebrity or two while you are down there!
