Roller Derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short match-ups in which both teams designate a scoring player who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. It's not all about fun nicknames and cute outfits, it's actually a really tough sport that is super competitive.
Here in Detroit we have quite a few teams that all play on a league called the Detroit Derby Girls. This Saturday, November 16th they will be having back to back bouts at The Masonic Temple. First up, at 6 p.m. the Devil's Night Dames will be taking on the Pistolwhippers. Then, at 8 p.m. the Detroit Pistoffs will take on the the D-Funk AllStars.
These matches will take place on the court at The Masonic Temple located at 500 Temple Avenue in Detroit. Tickets are $18 at the door, but two children under 12 can get in for free with each paying adult. The Detroit Derby Girls will also be collecting canned food for the Gleaners Community Food Bank. You can put your donations in the box of your favorite team and help them win the fight against hunger this winter. I'm really looking forward to seeing my first bout in person! Come out and join the fun and don't forget to bring a can!
