Every year there are a couple of different groups that Kresge chooses artists from. This year the categories are Dance/Music and Film/Theatre. Under these broad categories, there are several different disciplines that are recognized, including Choreography, Dance, Music Composition and Performance (of all different genres), Sound Art, Directing (in Film and Theatre), Screenwriting and Playwriting. Nine fellows will be chosen from the two main categories and they will be awarded with $25,000. That's a pretty big amount of money and amazing way to recognize people that excel in their art. Not to mention that it would be amazing to receive that much money for something you are already doing anyways!
In order to be considered for the Kresge Fellowship there is an application process. It is a pretty lengthy application and you will want to put some thought and effort into it. However, it isn't impossible and it is well worth your time. This opportunity is well within your reach. In fact, a few musicians that you are probably familiar with were granted this honor a couple of years ago, Terry Peake (Bahamut, Fireloom) and Passalacqua. Applications must be completed by January 31st though, so you need to get on it now! Once you submit your application it is reviewed by a panel of judges, who will narrow the entries down from now until later this Spring.
If this all sounds intriguing to you, you can head over to the Kresge Fellowship website here for more details. There are also several requirements that need to be met, which you should look over. A couple that stood out to us are that you must reside in the Metro Detroit area currently and throughout the year that your fellowship would last (so, roughly through the Summer of 2015) and you cannot be a student. One good note though is that you can apply as a collaboration (so a band could apply rather than just one member). Collaborations can include up to 5 members (one primary applicant and four additional). For a full list of rules and frequently asked questions, head here.
If you want in on the action, but don't fit into the Music/ Dance or Theatre/Film categories, don't worry. Next year the selected disciplines will change. They will include Literary Arts and Visual Arts. That also means that if you are interested in being recognized for Music, Film, Theatre or Dance you have to get started on your application now! Don't wait until next year because you will not be able to enter for those categories. It will take some work and some time, but as we have heard from our friends that are Fellows, it is well worth it. So spend some of these cold nights getting your art in order and constructing your artist statements! We would LOVE to see some more people we know receive this great honor. Best of luck!
