Check out our short interview with Vic from The Koffin Kats and come hang out with all of us this Saturday, it is going to be one hell of a time!
HID- How old were you when you learned to play stand up bass? What attracted you to that instrument?
Vic Victor- "Well I got my first one when I was 17. Took a terrible holiday job at Toys R Us to save up the $800. I dug the slapping percussive sound of it and what it added to the bands that used those kinds of basses. I was really into Stray Cats and Reverend Horton Heat at the same time I was getting into punk rock. I just thought those kinds of bands with upright basses looked so damn cool."
HID- How labor intensive is playing the stand up? When you are on stage you throw your whole body into it, do you ever get aches and pains from that?
Vic- "I imagine if we were to ever slow down the amount of shows we do, I wouldn't be able to just hop up there and monkey around and then feel ok the next day. At this point in time it just feels natural and I can swing that bass around and not think twice. It's all thanks to years or repetition. Although this new bass I have weighs a hell of a lot more than any of my previous ones so it's a bit of an ass kicker. I had it custom built to really take a beating."
HID- Why did the Koffin Kats decide to play this year's Blackout BBQ?
Vic- "We actually came up with the idea of making the Blackout BBQ a yearly thing. We were inspired by what the Suicide Machines have with the Black Christmas shows at the Majestic. So we teamed up with Black Iris to help arrange the show and get some great bands. Last year was the first one and it went well. Were hoping this year is better and it's a plan of ours to keep growing this event each year. Next year we would like to tie in a car show and maybe have some local vendors."
HID- What is the best show you played in the last year?
Vic- "We try to make every show our best show haha... But this year so far as had some really great moments for us. One of my personal favorites was selling out the Troubadour in Hollywood. Granted it's not a giant club, but I never thought I'd be able to ever say that. A lot of history in that place."
HID- What is the best city you explored on tour in the last year?
Vic- "We recently had some time to explore Helsinki, Finland. We usually don't get multiple days off when we are on tour. Or if we do we are usually in the middle of a corn field or the desert. But we utilized these ones to the fullest. They are huge on the whole sauna thing over there. I can tell you, it's an amazing hangover cure."
HID- What's next for the KK?
Vic- "No plans to slow down. We have shows booked to the end of the year, and we are already mapping out next year's touring. Slowly gathering new material as well. I'd like to put some new music out after the new year."
