24 Hour Ticket Giveaway: Win Tickets to See Mac Sabbath at The Magic Stick

This Wednesday, August 31st you can head to DTE to see Black Sabbath or you can make your way to The Magic Stick to see the real metal gods in Mac Sabbath! Fronted by Ronald Osbourne and backed by Slayer MacCheeze on guitar, Grimalice on bass and the Catburglar on drums, this band sings songs that sound oddly similar to those by the great Black Sabbath. The only difference is the in the lyrics. Instead of singing about Iron Man they sing about a Frying Pan, Quarter Pounders, and more, making them the kings of "Drive Thru Metal". Check them out for yourself below.

Mac Sabbath's show will be one of the first return shows for The Magic Stick, after it's short lived transformation to Populux. Joining them on stage is Clownvis Presley, whose name explains it all, and ellyeahdehd. Tickets for the show are only $15 and can be purchased in advance here. Win Tickets to See Sleigh Bells and Tunde Olaniran at El Club

New York based duo Sleigh Bells is gearing up to release a new album called Jessica Rabbit on November 11th. They have recently released two singles off the album and are currently touring the country in anticipation of the album's release. They will be making a stop in Detroit this Thursday, September 1st at El Club and one of my all time favorite artists, Mr. Tunde Olaniran himself will be opening the show.
Years ago, catching Tunde playing around Metro Detroit was easy, but these days he is also on tour crossing the US. So, when he comes home you have to head out and see the show. This back to back lineup is epic and the kind of thing that only Party Store Productions could bring to Detroit.

Tickets to get into the show will likely sell out in advance. For now, tickets are available for $25 if you click here. We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of PSP. Let Go and Just Enjoy With DUO Detroit

One of the hardest parts about going out for dinner is choosing where to go. Which is followed up by the difficult task of choosing what you want to eat once you get there. I have always had a hard time deciding what I want to eat at a restaurant, so I try to get my dining mates to team up and order with me so we can all try a few things off the menu. I like variety, which is why I have recently fallen in love with places like Katoi and The Peteroboro, where it's easy to order a few things off the menu and share them between the group. I also recently tried a new type of dining called Omakase, where all the deciding is done for you and I absolutely loved it.

Last month I was lucky enough to attend a DUO Detroit dinner. This pop up one night only event featured a 10+ course meal was served over four hours. The chef created a one of a kind experience that required nothing but an open mind. Instead of worrying about where to go and what I was going to eat, I sat back and enjoyed the ride.

Each month the location of the dinner changes. For this meal we gathered inside The Holding House, a new event space and art gallery in Detroit. DUO took the raw space of the gallery and converted it into a fine dining establishment for the night. Then, over the next four hours we were taken on a journey. The courses were labeled as follows: snacks, slice, south, summer, surprising, cruciferous, 2014, herbaceous, central, floral, citrus, sweet and rich. Each course was served alone on a plate and explained to us in detail before we tried it.

I ate caviar for the first time, found out that I love grapefruit when you pair it with a good cheese, and tried hibiscus sorbet! It was a roller coaster ride for my taste buds and I loved each and every dish more than the next. I found myself enjoying good conversation and a few bites of a new food every 10 minutes, which meant that I left full, but not overstuffed. The experience of letting go and going on a ride with the chef was wonderful.
Throughout the night, we talked, we ate, we laughed and we truly enjoyed ourselves. I highly suggest taking a date and trying this for yourself if you are lucky enough to get seat at the next one, or even the one after that. Duo only lets 50 people into each meal and these dinners sell out really fast. You need to follow them on Facebook and make sure to buy tickets the second they are released. All you need to do after you buy the tickets is show up and enjoy!
The next DUO dinner will be served on September 17th. This one will be extra special because it will feature four chefs instead of one. The team that will be cooking this meal will also be going to the culinary Olympics together. Tickets are normally around $50 a person, but for this dinner they will be $100 as it is a fundraiser for the Olympics. Plus, four different chefs will be cooking which means there will be more courses and more variety throughout the meal. If you miss that one, don't miss the next one in November!

Rock City Closes One Door and Opens Another

Rock City Eatery opened the doors of its Hamtramck location in 2013. The kitchen inside that space is small, but owner and chef Nikita Sanches proved you can make big things happen in a small space. His cooking made downtown Hamtramck a destination spot. It will be sad to see the restaurant close the doors of their first location, but they are moving on to bigger and better kitchens in the heart of Detroit.

This Saturday, August 27th will be the last day the doors will be open at the Hamtramck location. This is your last time to visit the space and your last time to get your fill of Sanches' food before the grand opening of the new space on September 8th. The last dinner in Hamtramck will be served from 3 p.m. 'til 11 p.m. this Saturday, the last drink will be served before Midnight, the doors of the space will close at Midnight sharp. Help Save Hamtramck Disneyland

In 1992, a Ukranian immigrant named Dmytro Szylak started a project. He began collecting and creating pieces that he arranged above his home, garage and throughout his yard. He started so he had something to do during retirement and then continued it for years. The "collage" includes pictures of Elvis and other pop culture stars, year-round Christmas lights, wooden soldiers, American flags, and more and it's called Hamtramck Disneyland.

The art installation has become a staple in Hamtramck and people flock to the town to see it. Dmytro and his creation have even been the topic of a couple of documentaries over the years. Sadly, last year Dmytro passed away and the future of his home and Hamtramck Disneyland became uncertain. The home went up for sale almost a year after Mr. Szylak passed and luckily a group that intends to preserve and maintain his work was able to purchase the property.
Hatch Art is the new owner of Hamtramck Disneyland. Hatch has been running a community art space and gallery in Hamtramck since 2012. Now they plan to also make Hamtramck Disneyland part of their work. They intend to upkeep the property maintain Szylak's vision for years to come. They will bring in art residents to work on adding to the display as pieces deteriorate, while continuing to keep the installation lively. However, in order to do all of this, they need your help!

Hatch currently is trying to raise $50,000 to help ensure the future of Hamtramck Disneyland. The crowd funding campaign is currently in its final days on Patronicity and they still have quite a ways to go. What makes this goal even more important to reach is that once they raise the $50k, it will be met by a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Michigan State Development Authority.

To help reach this goal by the end date of August 20th, Small's in Hamtramck is putting on a benefit show this Thursday, August 18thJames Linck, Go Tiger Go and Rayning will be hitting the stage at Small's and all proceeds will go towards Hamtramck Disneyland. They are asking for a donation of $10 at the door and 18+ are welcome. If you can't quite afford $10, get there between 8 and 9 and just pay what you can. Doors are set to open at 8 p.m. and the show will start at 9. This already sounds like it would be a great show, but add the fact that you'll be helping preserve this landmark and it makes it sound even better!

If you can't make it to Small's on Thursday, you can always donate via Patronicity any time between now and 11:45 p.m. on August 20th. With your donation you can get anything from a postcard to a shirt in return, depending on how much you give. For a list of gifts and more background on Hamtramck Disneyland and Hatch Art, click here.

Don't Miss ALSTOCK 4!

This Saturday, August 20th ALSTOCK is bringing together one of the most solid gatherings of Detroit artists that we have seen in quite awhile. The lineup for the day includes Little Animal, Jaws that Bite, Ancient Language, JP from the HP, Greater Alexander, Detroit Cydi, Britney StoneyJames Linck, White Bee, Barter Boyz, Greg Joslin, Mic Phelps and the Plug, Mister, Mega Powers, Dante Lasalle, Cousin Mouth and Trick Trick. The fest has become a Detroit underground legend and those in the know don't miss it. It's only $20 to get in the door, this includes food from Detroit Oink Catering, drinks and hospitality. The show runs from 2 p.m. - 12 a.m. and the location of the fest won't be announced until the day before the show. If you want to stay in the loop, you have to follow the Facebook feed here.

We asked Allan a few questions about the beginning of the fest and its evolution. Check out what he had to say and check back on Friday to get the rest of the deets on the party.

HID- When did you start ALSTOCK? Why?
AC- "This is the 4th annual Alstock extravaganza. The very first party in 2013 came as result of forgetfulness.

In December of 2012 I had a little get together in my basement. Although not the culmination, but certainly a catalyst for the #CoOwnaz, the lineup consisted of Gino The Ghost, Eddie Logix (who brought along Doc Waffles) and Passalacqua. It was without a doubt, a great time.

Cleaning up after that night I found a couple of extra mics that didn’t belong to me. So I messaged the two groups that weren’t my cousin and realized that they were Brent’s from Passalacqua. So I invited him to stop by. I had just got this old table in my back room so we sat back there because it was bright with natural light. We started clouding the air so we could see the light beams better and he started telling me about this festival that he had tried to put on before, but how it would be perfect in my backyard.

It was really Brent’s vision (he came up with the name too, not me. I’m not that narcissistic.) at first, but he convinced Bryan and I, and then the whole team came together and we created a magical night that has been the inspiration ever since."

HID- Who has played in previous years?
AC- "First off I would like to highlight the bands/performers that have been on EVERY Alstock thus far: BRITNEY STONEY; DOC WAFFLES; JAMES LINCK; MISTER; EDDIE LOGIX AND MIC PHELPS. (JP FROM THE HP would have been on that list, but Dan forgot the cymbals one year.)

Others that have played: ANCIENT LANGUAGE; GOSH PITH; COLD MEN YOUNG; DOC ILLINGSWORTH; DOUBLE WINTER; PHOSPHOR ELEPHANTS; SLEEPLESS INN; DANTE LASALLE; CLYDE MOOP; 2040; HIR-O; J WALKER XVI; NOTHING ELEGANT; KOPELLI; RUFIO JONES; PRGRM; DIAL 81; SHEEFY MCFLY; MIC WRITE; GOLDZILLA; DOS THE ARTIST; LOKEYE; ROYAL GRAND; ATOMS & EASE; BENJAMIN MILES; JAWS THAT BITE; SELFSAYS; and GINO THE GHOST"

HID- How do bands get chosen to be on the lineup?
AC- "Each year it’s been a little different. I ask a few select people who they would like to see, but it’s usually just a bunch of my friends that are doing cool things at the time."

HID- Where will you be hosting this year's event?

AC- "Now that I don’t have the event in my backyard, I like to keep it a secret until the day before. I will tell you that it is in Detroit and that I am really excited about this space. Both the main and DJ stages will be outdoors, but in the event of rain, there is a full indoor venue space ready to go."

HID- How do you get the sound system and all the stuff you need for the show?
AC- "I have a great friend that is a partner at 100 Percent Entertainment. Chis has been taking care of me and my events ever since the very first."

HID- Can you please explain what #CoOwnaz is?

AC- "#CoOwnaz is a family of like-minded individuals who support each other’s creative endeavors."

HID- Will there be vendors?
AC- "Over The Moon Clothing; Snowbunnie Sweeds; Detroit Dab City"

HID- What artist are you most excited about this year?
AC- "I am really excited about all of them. I set the lineup the other day and can really say that with the mix of different musicians that are taking the stage it really is going to blend well. Come early and stay late because you won’t want to miss anything."

Dirt Fest Moves to Pontiac and Takes Over the Town

This year the organizers behind Dirt Fest announced that they would be moving the annual music festival from its home in Birch Run to Pontiac. Fans reacted with mixed emotions, some excited that the fest would be closer to their home, others skeptical about how the event would be in a different location. But, now that Dirt Fest 2016 has come and gone, everyone that attended can agree that it was awesome!

For those that don't know, Dirt Fest was started about 20 years ago by a couple of guys that decided to have some bands play in a park pavilion in Birch Run, Michigan. Flash forward to 2016. The festival brought out big names like Asking Alexandria and Killswitch Engage, who played alongside numerous local acts. We recently talked to Dirt Fest co-founder Matt Dalton about the fest and its origins on our podcast. You can check that out here.
We must admit, at first we too were unsure how we felt about Dirt Fest packing up and moving locations. It was always fun to load up the car, head about an hour north, and spend the day in a parking lot in Birch Run. At the same time, we were super stoked that this festival would be closer to home and that more Metro Detroiters would have the opportunity to check it out.

As soon as we approached the gates at this year's fest, we were blown away! This year the Dalton Brothers and Dirt Fest family joined forces with The Crofoot in Pontiac and made the parking lot across from the venue their festival grounds. The lot featured 4 stages as well as vendors and food stands.
In addition to the 4 outdoor stages, the stage inside The Crofoot Ballroom was also utilized for the event. This was the first big change to what mainly was an outdoor festival in the past. Sure, there was the VIP area inside the Birch Run Expo Center for the bands and workers, but in past years most of the fans spent the day outside. With the addition of The Crofoot and their adjacent venues, festival goers could head inside to check out music, grab a drink, use the restroom, or even just cool off for a bit. This was a huge plus!

Outside the arrangement of the stages allowed you to check out the band you wanted to watch, while not hearing too much bleed over from other stages. It gave you plenty of room to get from stage to stage or check out vendor stands, while still being in a slightly more intimate setting in comparison to in the past.
One thing that wasn't different from past Dirt Fests is that once again this festival blew fans away with an amazing lineup! For us, the highlights of the day included sets by Hatebreed, Born of Osiris, Asking Alexandria, and of course those hometown boys in Wilson. The crowd and the bands fed off each other's energy throughout the day and into the night. The threat of rain didn't keep the droves of people away and every band made sure to deliver an awesome show to those fans. It was amazing to see these huge national acts take part in this festival, while praising the crew behind it, and showing the crowd how happy they were to be there. Time after time, bands were on stage talking about how kick ass Dirt Fest is, and their sentiments proved to be true when you would see them back stage giving organizers like Matt Dalton a huge hug or a high five. There's a reason that big names like Asking Alexandria and Jamey Jasta return to the Dirt Fest stage time and time again.
Not only do the bands return year after year, but so do the fans and the vendors. The Dalton Brothers have made sure to include their friends and their friends' companies in this festival every year. Once again this year, InkAddict set up shop and hosted meet and greets throughout the day. They also added a cool new addition this time around with a graffiti wall that fans could leave their mark on. Next door, PRTY Crew Collective set up shop alongside Vile Company. And as always, Hip In Detroit made sure we were there throughout the day to check out the party. Although there were thousands of fans there and hundreds people involved on the business side of things, the organizers and specifically the Daltons, made sure that everyone they crossed paths with knew how much they appreciated that you were there. Whether you were there to party, play on stage, or sell your goods, they wanted you to know that they were stoked that you were a part of it. That's not something that you will see at Warped Tour, Mayhem, or any of the other fests that bring these big names to town, and that's one of the big reasons that this festival is so successful!
We'd like to congratulate everyone behind Dirt Fest 2016 on putting on an amazing event! It was truly a kick ass day that blew everyone away. If you missed out this time around, don't make the mistake of missing Dirt Fest next year! Make sure you head over and like Dirt Fest on Facebook here to stay in the loop on next year's event. Even though this year's fest just ended, it won't be long until we start hearing about Dirt Fest 2017!
