Full Monty has only been a band since the summer of 2014, but they already have a couple of releases under their belt and they're getting ready to release a full length this week. What started as an acoustic act has now transformed into a full force punk rock trio featuring Dan Harness on Vocals and Guitar, Danny Bolterstein on Drums and Bob Gibson on Bass and Vocals. Chances are that you've probably seen these guys on stage a time or two before, they've played with big Detroit names like Break Anchor, Bastardous and even The Goddamn Gallows. Well, this Thursday night they will be playing with some great Detroit area bands once again!
HID- Describe Full Monty's sound in three words or less.
Full Monty- "Punk-ish Rock"
HID- How did you guys start playing music together? What's the story behind Full Monty?
Full Monty- "I was in a punk band when I was 15 and through that I met our bass player Bob and our drummer Danny (both in different bands at the time). So years after that band broke up, I started doing a solo acoustic project under the name Full Monty. I intended it to become a band and eventually Bob and I started jamming in his garage. He wanted to start a band and one day I mentioned I wanted to make Full Monty a full band. He volunteered to play bass. I had lost contact with Danny for about 3 or 4 years, but started hanging out with the dudes in CbJ when I moved down to the Detroit area, in which Danny was hanging with them as well. I mentioned I was having a problem finding a drummer for my "new" band and had given him a CD I was handing out at a show with demos on it. He heard it, liked what he heard and asked to join. So there's that story."
HID- What are three bands that have had the biggest influence on your band?
Full Monty- "Green Day, the Beatles, and Against Me!"
HID- Tell us about the new album. Where did you record it? How long did you work on it?
Full Monty- "The new album is called Bombay. Its 10 songs long. We recorded it with Tom Skill (of CbJ) at his basement studio, Cow Haus Recording, in Eastpointe in a total of 24 hours in 3 days. I'd say 8 out of 10 songs were written as far back as 2 years ago and 2 of the them (including the first song we released) were written within a month of each other. I was worried a lot when I started writing again, after about a 3 to 4 month period of not doing anything with music whatsoever, and it was coming out the way it came out on the record basically. It's very different from what I had been writing up until that point. This record is filled with validation, for me personally."
HID- You have a pretty stacked lineup for your release show! Give us three reasons why everyone should come out to this show.
1. Because it's also Voice of Addictions tour kickoff and they are good friends of ours from Chicago.
2. Bob's incredibly good looks
3. Small's is a fun venue
HID- The number three keeps coming up in this interview, so let's go with it...Three favorite Detroit area bands:
Full Monty- "Matt Wixson's Flying Circus, Fires In Japan, Break Anchor (that was very difficult)"
Three best foods:
Nachos, Tacos, Corn on the cob
Three favorite places in the Metro Detroit area:
The Rockery, Comerica Park, The Majestic Building
If you were on a desert island, what are three things that you would want to have with you?
A guitar, a drum kit, and a semi-truck full of beer
Three best things in the entire world:
Mexican Food, Music and Dogs
HID- Is there anything else that you want our readers to know?
Full Monty- "Our new album Bombay comes out on August 11th with an album release show accompanying it at Small's in Hamtramck and you should go see it! $7, doors at 8 p.m., 18+!
Also if you ever see us at a show, come say hi! I swear we're nice...I think."
