Celebrate The Handgrenades Latest Album "Tunnels" at The Loving Touch this Saturday!

Detroit has always been known as rock city, but it's been quite awhile since we celebrated the music that made this city famous. Let's face it, there aren't as many great rock bands as there used to be, but every once in awhile one comes along that keeps the dream alive. For us, that band is The Handgrenades. The five piece Hamtramck based band hasn't released a new album in over four years, but this Saturday they are blessing all of us with their latest creation, Tunnels. If you have seen them play live over the last year you may have gotten a taste of the tunes on this gem, but this Saturday we will finally get to hear the new music live and in person.

The Handgrenades have put together a nice little night that includes an opening performance by Spit Spot, the latest project from Thomas Erik from The Fall of Troy and Jennica Wahl aka Bye Bye Birdy. They have also invited Pietrzyk Perogies to serve up some food, PRTY Crew Collective to set up shop, and me, Sadie Q to host the show! The best part is that The Handgrenades will finally have their new album Tunnels available for purchase! Then, you can catch The HG's performing the song live this Saturday, November 5th at The Loving Touch in Ferndale. The show starts at 8 p.m.. and it's only $5 to get in the door. This is your chance to have a  little fun and remember why you fell in love with music in the first place. The HG's harmonies are going to make your face melt, so come out and experience what music is all about.

This Thursday, November 3rd Grammy Award Winner Belanova are coming to Detroit to play at El Club. The three piece pop project from Mexico consists of Denisse Guerrero (lead vocals), Edgar Huerta (keyboards, programming) and Ricardo "Richie" Arreola (bass, guitar). See The Exorcist at The Redford Theatre

The Exorcist has been considered the scariest movie of all time by many. Created in 1973 by William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty, this movie tells the story of a 12 year old girl that is possessed by Satan. Her mother seeks help from two priests to help save her daughter. The stills from the film are creepy enough to give you nightmares, but here's the trailer too.

If you want to get the ultimate scare this Halloween weekend, head to the Redford Theatre to see The Exorcist on the big screen. They will be showing the movie this Saturday night, October 29th at 11:30 p.m. Tickets to see the movie are only $5 and can be purchased in advance here. The theatre made a special note that this movie is not for kids! We would like to also point out that this movie is not for scaredy cats! So if you're brave enough, head to the Redford this Saturday night.

Celebrate Nine Years of Haute to Death

Have you ever attended a Haute to Death party? If you have, you already know what I'm about to say, but if you haven't, listen up! Haute to Death throws some of the best parties in Detroit. They are magical, in the way that I always imagined Studio 54 used to be. Everyone is there. Everyone looks great, and everyone dances. If you are looking for a night of no holds barred fun, this is where you will find it.

DJs Ash and Jon spin a mix of post punk, new wave, italo, electro, diva house and more and they do not take requests because why the fuck should they, it's their party! They also never charge very much to come out and play. Tickets for their nine year bash will be $3 at the door before midnight and $5 after. The Temple Bar opens its doors at 10 p.m. for the party this Saturday, October 29th and 21+ are welcome to come out.

In honor of H2D's 9th birthday we asked Ash Nowak 9 questions about the duo's past, present and future. Check it out and get ready to party this Saturday!

HID-If you could “do-over” one party from the last 9 years which one would it be?
H2D-We only ever want to do-over parties in the sense we wish that we could go again immediately after they end (which is most of them.) But right now with winter approaching, we're really wishing that we could go back to our Swim Club series from the summer.

HID- After 9 years years of Haute to Death, what are you most proud of? H2D-The family we've cultivated! We're lucky to have a dance floor full of so many fun and freaky people, some we've known for years and some who are first timers. We really pride ourselves on offering a diverse, safe space where everyone is welcome.

HID- Do you have a go to dance move? If so what is it?
H2D-It depends how deep into the night we are- but typically, one hand is for a drink, the other is for an elaborate jazz routine.

HID- Gold or Silver?
H2D-Silver for tequila, gold for everything else.

HID- If I gave you a million and you had to spend it, how would you blow it?
H2D-We'd be tempted to throw some serious events with that kind of cash, but we've thrown some serious events without it... We'd most likely start a peer-run grant program for Detroit creatives.

HID- If you could time travel would you go to the future or the past?
H2D-We're not afraid of the future, but our aesthetic universe is (happily) stuck in the 80s.

HID- What's on the Haute to Death bucket list?
H2D-So much! Now that we're approaching 10, we're starting to plan for the *next* 10. You'll have to sign up for our mailing list to see what we're up to ;)

HID- What’s your go to karaoke song?
H2D-Jon does a solid rendition of Bowie's China Girl. Ash's go-to is Never Tear Us Apart by INXS

See The Rocky Horror Picture Show on the Big Screen this Weekend

This past week FOX revived The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a new cast, starring big names like Laverne Cox and Adam Lambert. The remake received mixed reviews, but everyone can agree, nothing compares to the original. If you would like to see the cult classic on the big screen (after all, 'tis the season) head to Cinema Detroit or the Main Art Theatre this weekend.

After over 40 years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show still holds up. You better believe that fans will show up in costume, ready to sing along and shout at the screen at all of these screenings. If you've never gone to a showing of Rocky Horror before, you're in for a treat. Check out the trailer below.

If you'd like to see Rocky Horror at Cinema Detroit, they will be showing the film on Friday, October 28th, Saturday, October 29th and again on Halloween night. There will be shows at 8 and 10 p.m. on all 3 nights. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance here. There will also be prop bags available on site for 6 bucks, which include rice, rings, newspapers, lights, rubber gloves, noisemakers, toilet paper (Scott brand of course), toast, party hats, and cards. Celebrate Halloween at B.Nektar's HallowMead Party

B.Nektar Meadery in Ferndale is celebrating the spookiest season of the year by hosting a Halloween party inside their taproom. This Saturday, October 29th they will celebrating the season by releasing their two new brews, The Devil's Juice and Don't Fear The Carolina Reaper! The event will feature a costume contest and a few food trucks will be parked outside when you're ready for a snack!

Covenfest II

This Friday, October 28th Small's will be celebrating Halloween by welcoming the second annual Covenfest to its stage. This annual event features a mix of cool cover bands and fun performances to raise money for one of our all time favorite local charities, Turning Point. This year's lineup includes Kommander as Twins of Evil: Rob Zombie vs. Marilyn Manson, Nique Love Rhodes and The NLR Experience as Missy Elliott, The Scrappers as The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Queens of Noise a Joan Jett/Runaways cover band and the students from the School of Rock as The Ramones.

Tickets to get into the show are $10 with 100% of the cover going to charity. There will be a silent auction featuring a variety of amazing items that were donated from local businesses and a one of a kind pin that you can purchase for an additional $10 below.

Creepy Cheapy IX

Creepy Cheapy is a legendary Metro Detroit Halloween party that takes place at The Crofoot in Pontiac, Michigan every October. Each year hundreds of bands apply to get the honor of playing the show, but only a few will get to take the stage.

This year's event will take place at The Crofoot this Friday, October 28th and it will feature Ironsnake as Judas Priest, American Noise Army as Korn, Stories Untold as twentyonepilots, The Messenger Birds as White Stripes, Go Tiger Go as Miley Cyrus, Stikyfut as Radiohead, The Space Roar as Thrice, The Social Bandits as Pink Floyd, Courtney and the Hurleys as Dolly Parton, Tripp 'N' Dixie as Aerosmith, Shapes & Colors as My Chemical Romance, The Idiot Kids as Dr. Frankenfurter, Come Out Fighting as The Offspring, The ILL Itches as The Gories, and Those Hounds as Queens of the Stone Age. There is a little something for everyone.

Tickets to get into the show are $5 in advance and $10 on the night of the event. We highly recommend getting your tickets in advance because VIP tickets are already sold out and this event will be packed. Doors for Creepy Cheapy 9 open at 7 p.m and it goes 'til 2 a.m.

See "Young Frankenstein" at the Redford Theatre

One of the late great Gene Wilder's most popular films was Young Frankenstein. Created by Mel Brooks in 1974, this hilarious horror film tells the story of, "An American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that he is not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body." Over the years this movie has become a classic and favorite to many. This weekend you can see Young Frankenstein on the big screen at the historic Redford Theatre. The theatre will have showings on both Friday and Saturday night, October 21st and 22nd at 8 p.m. Tickets for each showing are only $5 and can be purchased in advance here. Whenever Lucero comes to town, it's a party. The band has been out on tour for a couple of weeks now. Before they wrap things up in Missouri on October 30th, they'll be making a stop in Detroit. This is a different venue than fans are used to seeing the band at in Detroit, since in the past they usually play at the Majestic or Magic Stick. Catch Michael Myers at the Main Art

Fall is officially here and the Halloween season is in full swing. The parties have already started, costume shops are on nearly every corner, and spooky movies are hitting the screens. This weekend you have a chance to watch one of the best scary movies of all time, so good that it launched a whole series, and that movie is Halloween.

Created in 1978 by John Carpenter, this movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis and of course Michael Myers played by Tony Moran. The film tells the story of a masked killer. "On Halloween night of 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers stabbed his sister to death. After sitting in a mental hospital for 15 years, Myers escapes and returns to Haddonfield to kill." The mask and the music have become iconic over the years.

Halloween is showing on the big screen this weekend at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak as part of their Midnight Madness series. You can see the movie for yourself on Friday and Saturday, October 21st and 22nd at midnight. Tickets for these showings are $7 and can be purchased in advance here.

See the Amazing Acro-Cats LIVE in Detroit

If you've ever wanted to see a cat walk a tightrope or a band of cats rocking out, this is your chance! This week the Amazing Acro-Cats are coming to Detroit! This group of house cats is anything but ordinary. Trained by Samantha Martin and her clicker, these cats ride on everything from a ball to a skateboard. They have been featured on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, Animal Planet, and one of the Acro-Cats is even a Guinness world record holder. Check out the feature that Animal Planet did on Tuna & The Rock Cats, featuring members of the Acro-Cats and the only all cat band in the world.

You can see the Acro-Cats live this week at the Jam Handy in Detroit. The kitties will be performing this Thursday, October 20th, Friday, October 21st, at a matinee on Sunday, October 23rd and in the evening Monday, October 24th. Tickets for these shows are $23 for general admission or $33 for VICP (Very Important Cat Person) tickets. You can pick yours up in advance here. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go towards Animal House of SE Michegan. After all, the Acro-Cats are rescues themselves and they want to help their fellow cats out. Motor Kitty Rescue will also be on site holding an adoption event. So whether you're looking to adopt a new furry family member or you just love animals, this is an event you won't want to miss!

Don't Miss Your Chance to Meet Lala, Coby and Beau at The Red Bull House of Art

Red Bull House Of Art changed the City of Detroit. A few years ago the energy drink company opened a gallery in heart of the Eastern Market and helped spur on a new wave of art and art appreciation in Detroit. In the beginning, the gallery would bring together a variety of local artists to spend a few months creating something new to be featured in the gallery.  After about 10 different rounds of local residencies they decided to change the format and instead have started to invite three artists from out of town to come here, stay a few, and experience the city while they put together the next show for the house. It's an amazing program that has introduced Detroit to new artists and introduced the rest of the world to the art and culture of Detroit.

This time around the gallery has brought Beau Stanton, Coby Kennedy and Lala Abaddon to town to experience Detroit and create. I had the pleasure of having dinner with the group at Green Dot Stables and I can assure you that they are having a great time in Detroit while working very hard to get ready for their opening on November 11th, 2016. They are about halfway through their stay here so they will be sitting down to talk about the process so far at the Gallery on Saturday, October 22nd at 2 p.m.  This will be a chance for you to meet the artists and have a conversation with them. We had a chance to talk to Lala a little bit about her experience so far and this is what she had to say. If you want to hear more, head up to the Red Bull House of Art on the 22nd!

HID-What is the biggest misconception you had about Detroit before you arrived here?

Lala Abaddon- "I can't say that I had any misconceptions, because I didn't know much about it to begin with, beyond common knowledge... but what what I wasn't prepared for was the level of magic and art that is just celebrated and experienced all over the city. I have had people tell me how great Detroit is- how magical, specifically, but I wouldn't have imagined it to be so constant and vivid. And also, so welcoming. There really is a common thread throughout the city the keeps all of its people connected, and that comes out in forms of community and gathering that is refreshing for me to experience."

HID- What is the most surprising thing that you've discovered about the city so far?
Lala Abaddon- "Really I think it's the architecture. Sometimes the art deco and late 50's modernism, coupled with the industrial structures, and the eventual loss of certain industries, reminds me of where I grew up as a kid in Syracuse NY. But other elements of it just make other cities pale in comparison- like the Guardian Building, and the Fisher Building... they are so opulent, and detailed, but so modern and forward thinking. There is an air of late 50's grandeur and pride, and you see that in the remaining older houses and structures, too."

HID-Have you been able to check out any bands or Detroit artists? If so who have you liked?
Lala Abaddon- "As for artists I was actually so lucky to be here during Murals in the Market, so I have met so many artists in the past week especially, and it has been ever inspiring. I've also gone to a lot of shows, like the Big Sculpture Show at The Factory, where Hannah Chalew blew my mind. During murals in the market I got to know Sydney James and see her mural unfold and her work is so charged and strong, so from a personal and artistic level I am humbled by that. Also I got to watch the film Wastedland 2 by Andrew Shirley a few times at the Art Park and that was incredibly funny and motivating, and real. There have been so many artists in and out, and I've met countless incredibly talented people."

HID- Are you nervous about showing your work to everyone on November 11th?
Lala Abaddon- "I am definitely not nervous. If anything I am just anxious to create all the work and be there with it all finished. What I have planned is more than me just isolating myself and creating a good body of work to hang on the wall and be admired. I want to give back that inspiration and magic that Detroit and it's people have already given to me with experiential, reality bending work. So the majority of the work I am creating is installation based, and there will really be an opportunity for people to choose to interact with it. I think Detroit is so hands on, and so much of it is burned forever in my brain. I'm trying to translate that all back, but with my own twist."

HID- Is there any chance you would ever move here or come back for a visit after the residency is done?
Lala Abaddon- "Most definitely. I wish I could move here, now. It seems like it is changing by the day and so a part of me wants to be here to experience more of it in it's purity. But, I don't think I'll be moving here just yet- I still love Brooklyn, and all it has to offer, and all it has given me. But I will definitely be back, as Detroit already feels like home."

Bevlove is a young and upcoming hustler with the voice of an angel and the body of of a vixen. She is a strong black woman who knows how to entertain and when she performs, she takes over the room. She is a one woman enterprise who handles all of her own booking and promotion. She is one of our favorite up and coming artists in Detroit and we are sincerely looking forward to her album release at El Club this Saturday, October 22nd. She will be releasing her new album and performing alongside La' Britney and Alexander Lynch.

This week Andrew Katz and his band Clear Plastic Masks return to Detroit to play at El Club on Friday, October 21st. Katz grew up in the burbs of Detroit before relocating to NYC and forming the band in 2011. These cats met on a street corner and have been touring the world playing shows together ever since. The band is on the verge of releasing a new album called Nazi Hologram on October 28th. This will be the first thing they have put out since their last EP CPM in 2013. Illuminate at The Michigan Science Center

There is always a new reason to visit The Michigan Science Center. They are constantly opening new exhibits and hosting fun events that give you a unique opportunity to check out the center up close and personal. Last month they opened a new exhibit called the Creatures of Light, this exhibit features organisms that produce their own light and explores the various reasons they are able to do this. This exhibit was curated by the American Museum of Natural History and will be showing at the Science Center through mid January.

If you would like to get an in depth look at light and see the Science Center after hours you can attend Illuminate, an after hours event at the museum this Saturday, October 22nd. The museum will open its doors for a special after hours event that will feature hands on activities, demonstrations, performances, desserts and adult beverages. We have attended one of these after hours in the past and we were pleasantly surprised by how much fun we had. It was fun to walk around the place with a glass of wine after hours, much different from the days of going there on a school trip!

See "Generation Startup" this Weekend at the DIA

Have you ever had an amazing idea, but you were just too afraid to take a chance and make that idea a reality? We are lucky enough to live in a city that is coming back to life. It is full of opportunities and people taking chances. Generation Startup is a film about some of these people.

Created by Cynthia Wade and Cheryl Miller, this film tells the story of six recent college graduates that "put everything on the line to build startups in Detroit". Those six people are Brian Rudolph and Avery Hairston of Banza, Dextina Booker of Rock Ventures and Shinola, Labib Rahman from Mason, Kate Catlin at Detroit Labs, and Max Nussenbaum of Castle. You can learn more about them and their stories before you see the film by clicking here. The filmmakers followed these individuals for 17 months to show you their struggles, defeats and successes during their entrepreneurial endeavors.

This Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th you can see Generation Startup at the DIA. The film will be shown at 9:30 p.m. both nights in the Detroit Film Theatre. This weekend Seraphine Collective and Party Store Productions are bringing the amazing Gaelynn Lea to Detroit. Gaelynn Lea has been a musician for over 20 years. She released her debut album All the Roads that Lead Us Home last year, featuring traditional fiddle tunes and beloved standards. The Devil Wears Prada Hits the Stage at The Crofoot with Memphis May Fire, Silverstein and Like Moths to Flames

Four of the biggest metalcore bands in the music scene will be hitting the stage at The Crofoot on Sunday, October 16th. The lineup includes The Devil Wears Prada, Memphis May Fire with Silverstein and Like Moths to Flames. This bill is currently out on tour together and the Metro Detroit date is actually the first night that Silverstein will be playing. It's all being brought to you by Rise Records and the tour is appropriately being called the Rise Up tour.

This past week Joyce Manor released their new album Cody via Epitaph Records. This is the second studio release from the band, the first was Never Hungover Again back in 2014. The band spent two months in the studio working on this album that embraces their pop punk roots, while still creating a newer sound for them. Win Tickets to Say Goodbye to The Dillinger Escape Plan

Over the last 20 years The Dillinger Escape Plan has released 6 studio albums and toured the world. They have been able to find a way to make a living off music, in other words they have been living the dream. But, all good things must come to an end, and at the end of this tour The Dillinger Escape Plan will be throwing in the towel.

The band recently recorded and released their 6th album Dissociation before announcing that this will in fact be their last tour. It is sad to see such a great band throwing in the towel, but it's awesome that we get one more chance to go nuts at a Dillinger show before they bow out of the game. They will be performing at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac one last time this Monday, October 17th. This may very well be the last time that you can ever catch the band playing together live, so it's important to make it to this one if you are a fan of the band.

We reached out to Dillinger to ask them a few questions about the end, the future and the new album. Dillinger Guitarist Ben Weinman took some time to chat with us before the show, check out what he has to say and find out how to enter to win tickets to the show! 

HID- Where did you record your 6th and final album "Dissociation"?
Ben Weinman- "The process this time was completely different for us. We did the drums in one studio in NY, the guitars and bass in the The Party Smasher inc. studio in NJ (that my other guitar player and I run), and the vocals in LA. The album was mixed in Boston."

HID- What’s your favorite track off the new album and why?
Ben Weinman- "That's like asking someone to tell you who their favorite kids are. I will say that "Limerent Death", the first song on the album, is one of my favorite songs to play live. It makes me want to explode. I feel it with every pore in my body."

HID- When you started DEP did you ever think it would last 20 years?
Ben Weinman- "No way. I didn't think it would last more than a year or two. I had already given up on music as a career at that point. I played every weekend to express my inner anxiety and frustration. Then I went back to work and school every Monday like a normal person. One day, the demand was just there and somehow it evolved into my entire life for 20 years."

HID- What will you miss most about touring? What will you not miss about it?
Ben Weinman- "I will miss seeing friends that I have made from all around the world. I will miss waking up in a different city every night. I will miss the feeling, that I get when on stage, that nothing else exists. No problems. No injuries. But most of all, I will miss missing home. How many people know what it's like to actually miss your home. Actually appreciate where you live. The simple things. Driving yourself to the store. Having lunch with your parents. Playing with my dogs and sleeping in my own bed. But I also look forward to being able to forge relationships and new projects at home that would otherwise be impossible to take advantage of as a touring musician. Being on the road can be lonely because after a while you realize that life keeps moving while you stand still. It's hard to believe I'm 20 years older than when I started this because I have literally been doing the same thing almost every day for 20 years."

HID- When you think back over the last 20 years, do you have a favorite place to play, a favorite festival?
Ben Weinman- "I really love playing in NY. Of course it's my home town, but it's also the most open minded and diversified city in the world. There is something for everyone in NY and it's nice to come through and be there with the rest of the weirdos."


HID- What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into the music business today, any knowledge you would like to pass on?
Ben Weinman- "I would advise everyone who wants a career, and not just a job, to create something that they believe in. Something they feel needs to exist. Even if it's for selfish reasons. When you believe in what you do, others will believe what you do is worthwhile. They will trust you are doing things for the right reasons and will follow you despite the trends. This is not something you can fake. There is a lot of noise out there and a lot of distractions. It's a sea of sharks out there and the phonies can't survive long."

HID- Any great memories in Detroit that you would be willing to share with us?
Ben Weinman- "Lots. I loved playing Saint Andrew's church and our old guitar player Jeff Tuttle is from, and still lives, in Detroit. That city has soul. One night that stands out to me is the night I hung out with a semi drunk homeless man for about 6 hours and just talked about life. Surprisingly he had a cell phone. At one point he smashed it on the floor. He just didn't care. It was kind of philosophical. Or maybe it was the crack."

HID-You have said never reunion, do you really mean never?
Ben Weinman- "Never say never. But no plans on it."

HID- Where do you want to be in five years?
Ben Weinman- "I want to be centered and happy. That's really it. I'm sure that will involve a lot of projects."

Grab a Cocktail or Five at the Third Detroit Cocktail Classic

One of our favorite ways to celebrate the end of the week is with a cocktail. Detroit has a plethora of amazing places to get a good cocktail and this Friday a bunch of them are coming together in one place, The Detroit Cocktail Classic. This is the third year that the Cocktail Classic will be held in Detroit. It's no surprise that this event is growing every year, so they moved to a new space to give everyone more room to have a good time. This year's cocktail classic will take place inside Shed 3 in the Eastern Market and it will feature an interesting collection of businesses including Bad Luck, Bigalora, The Bird and The Bread, Cuisine, Firebird Tavern, Great Lakes Coffee, Grey Ghost, Huron Room, Imperial, Katoi, The Keep, La Rondinella, The Last Word, Mabel Grey, MGM Grand, The Oakland, The Peterboro, Public House, Punch Bowl Social, Ravens Club, Roast, Rock City Eatery, Selden Standard, Sidecar, The Skip, The Stand, Standby, The Sugar House, Townhouse, The Whiskey Parlor, and Wright & Company.

The idea behind the classic is that each restaurant is given a liquor to work with to create their own signature cocktail. Each attendee then pays $45 for 12 tickets to walk around and spend trying a sample of cocktails that were created for the event. There will also be various food trucks available for purchase at the event. The more you eat, the more you can drink! 

The classic kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs 'til 10 p.m. on Friday. Shed 3 is located at 2801 Russell Street in Detroit.
