Win Tickets to See Minus the Bear at St. Andrew's Hall

Just a few weeks ago indie rock legends Minus the Bear released their latest album, Voids. This was the first new release from the band in almost five years. They commented on that note on social media by saying:
"The process of making VOIDS was multi-faceted and resulted in a whole reexamination of ourselves, both personally and professionally. What we managed to create is represented in these ten songs and encompasses an overall sense of purpose again that has firmly distilled our collective desire to keep going. We hope it was worth the wait."
You can pick the new album up here, through the band's bandcamp page, and on most other music platforms. You can also check out the song "Invisible" off Voids below.

Now Minus the Bear is out on tour in support of this new album and they're making their way to Detroit this weekend! They will be hitting the stage at St. Andrew's Hall this Sunday night, April 2nd. Joining them for the evening are Beach Slang and Bayonne. Tickets for this show are $23.50 and are going quickly! You can be purchased in advance here.

Win Tickets to See Mom Barley, George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus and More at El Club!

This Friday night George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus will be hitting the stage at El Club along with a great lineup of bands! The list includes The Ferdy Mayne, The Bardobees and Mom Barley, who are releasing their latest EP that night. The new album is called Into The Dark, you can check out the title track below.

We had a chance to chat with Mom Barley's bassist, Sean Cecil before the release show. See what he had to say about the band, the show and the new album. Then, read ahead to find out how you can win a pair of tickets to Friday night's show!

HID- Starting off, describe Mom Barley in one sentence or less.
Sean Cecil- "Mom Barley is folk rock band that has touches of psychedelic, progressive and soul, with a lot of jam and vocal harmonies."

HID- Who came up with your band name?
SC- "Steve our drummer came up with the name. I believe Matt and him were hanging out and partaking in a friendly green substance induced conversation about what to call the band. "Mom Barley" rolled off Steve's tongue and they both agreed to stick with it... I was not there for this! but it was a three piece at the time and majority rules haha, but after awhile it grew on me and that's just who we are now. It had nothing to do with a play on words of the late and great Bob Marley, which we hear alllllll the time. Not much of a story, just one of those names that happen without a reason or much real thought. Very riveting stuff, right?"

HID- Tell us about the new album Into The Dark. Where did you record it?
SC- "Into The Dark is our sophomore album. It's much heavier hitting and more mature than our previous album "Proverbial Thorn". While it still has a folk over tone in some songs we've moved into more of twangy rock outfit. The theme of Into The Dark kinda represents moving forward into a future of complete uncertainty, but hoping for the best. We recorded with a fella that goes by the name Roscoe and wishes to remain anonymous for his own reasons, but I can tell you that he also recorded Thornetta Davis and The Koffin Kats to name a few. He has done such an excellent job with the production that we felt it was unnecessary to send it out and get mastered."

HID- Is it true that it only took you guys 6 hours to record this album? How did you pull that off?
SC- "Yeah, about 6 hours total. Most people know how expensive a worthwhile recording can be without any kind of financial backing and so did we. We opted to go for full band live tracking compared to recording each instrument track by track and playing every song a million times and then hating them afterward haha. We figured with live tracking we could hopefully knock each song out within 5 or so takes and have more of a raw vibe to it all, easier to feel emotion and have some of those impurities in there to give it some personality. The band was practicing about 2 days a week, 3 hours at a time for about a month and a half and made those songs second nature to play. We knocked all the songs out within two takes, so I'd say the hard work paid off and saved us a few dollars too!"

HID-What's your favorite track off of the new album?
SC- "My favorite song is probably "Days". The song starts off as kind of a really emotional song coming in soft and ambient with Djeto playing the E-bow on his guitar and Matt finger-picking a pretty tune over it. I enjoy the vocal harmonies, The lyrics Matt wrote, the build up near the end and the ambient guitar solo that Djeto wrote for this song. I guess its just one of those songs that make me feel something special while we play it, not that the other songs don't, this one just does more for me. It is actually probably the most chill song on this EP, but that's just me. Every time I show someone the album, each person has a different favorite song soooo... hah"

HID- The title track on this album is based off of a novel. Why did you feel compelled to write this song?
SC- "Matt read the book "Man in the Dark" by Paul Auster. The main character dreams of an alternate reality where things are much different than the life he actually lives in. He wrote the song more of an idea behind the book and how it could relate to him. Obviously, our country is going through some very confusing and problematic times and when he sings the lyrics, such as "Lying in bed staring into the dark, thinking what've we done, what have we become?" relate to his thoughts of what the world could be like with out wars or wealth issues, which also is mentioned in the song. The book, more so, just inspired a thought that became a song."

HID- Are you guys excited to play El Club on Friday night? It's one of our favorite venues in Detroit right now!
SC- "Absolutely! It's definitely more of a premium venue around Detroit. Now this show is gonna work a bit different than some people are used to because it's kind of an early show. We had a little mix up somewhere and this is where we're at, so we're gonna make the best of it. Doors are at 7 p.m. and The Bardobees will be going on first at 7:30 p.m., so hopefully attendees will be punctual haha!"

HID- Why should everyone come out to the show on Friday?
SC- "Well, this bill is pretty stacked with talent from start to finish. We have The Ferdy Mayne coming from LA (originally from Ypsi) and he just put a new album out on March 24th and it is so well written by Shane Firek, so it is almost like a double album release show. We have The Bardobees from Wyandotte and these guys are like a hidden treasure who play indie rock. Very well practiced musicians on all parts and Zach the vocalist has moments of Jeff Buckley-ness, you'll most likely be hearing more of these guys soon. George Morris and the Gyspy Chorus will be topping off the show and if you don't know these guys by now, you probably don't follow the Detroit music scene much. These guys are top notch and are definitely a primo band around Detroit and beyond, they too have just recently released their newest album in March. Lots of new albums to pick up!"

HID- Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?
SC- "Be excellent to each other!"

Admission to Friday's show is only $10 and tickets can be purchased in advance here. Doors are set to open at 7 p.m, and like Sean said, this show will start early. So don't drag your feet! Thanks to Party Store Productions we are also giving away a pair of tickets to this show. If you would like to enter to win those tickets, please send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #Friday in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get to attend the show with a friend that night for free!

Dequindre Cut Community Clean Up

The Dequindre Cut is one of Detroit's most popular outdoor green trails. The trail was built on an old Grand Trunk Western Railroad line that was originally built in the 1930s. The line was used by passengers until the '80s and for transport into the turn of the century. These days it is a popular place to go for a run or a bike ride, and it's a great place to see some of Detroit's unique graffiti. Spring is right around the corner and all of us are ready to take advantage of the trail, but this winter was rough, windy and rainy and the old trial needs a little love before it can be fully enjoyed this summer.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is urging everyone to sign up to come clean up the trail this Saturday, April 1st. They are asking everyone who is willing to help to visit this website to sign up for the clean up. Then they would like you to meet them to check-in at the Dequindre Cut entrances at Woodbridge, Gratiot and Wilkins Street for registration and directions. The clean up will take place from noon till 4 p.m. this Saturday and all that can help are welcome to help for whatever amount of time they are able to give!

The conservancy will provide garbage bags, gloves, and light snacks to help you do your part to clean up the trail for all of us to enjoy. To learn more about the cleanup and to get updates on the event visit the event invite on Facebook here.

Have the Best Meal Imaginable at Chartreuse

Flower Installation by Pot and Box

Metro Times recently released an op ed piece about the service industry of Detroit. This article caused a lot of controversy, a lot of people agreed with the writer and a lot of people were offended by what she had to say.  I read the article and was intrigued by the point that it was making. I'm not going to lie, I have had some really bad service at some of the new hot spots around the city, but I have also received some of the best service and eaten some of the best meals of my life. Instead of focusing on who's doing everything wrong, I want to focus on one place that has been consistently doing everything right.

Chartreuse Kitchen and Bar is about to celebrate its second birthday. The unique Detroit restaurant has one of the most interesting and thoughtful menus in the city and the best service and hospitality that I have ever experienced. They have curated a welcoming space that features some of our favorite Detroit artists, this includes a painting by Oui Zi and a flower installation that was created by Pot and Box. From the moment you arrive you are treated well, seated, given water immediately and every question you could possible have is answered with a smile. The staff seems genuinely happy to be at work and their good vibes instantly rub off on you.  This superb services relaxes you and prepares you to enjoy their unique menu.

The menu is full of interesting dishes that you can't just easily whip up at home so every bite you take feels a little bit more special. During my most recent visit I shared the fried egg, the mushroom confit (minus the duck as I was sharing with a vegetarian) and I ordered the steak for myself.  After dinner we also enjoyed a delightful pudding off the dessert menu.  Each item we ordered was better than the next. The fried egg was one of the best things I have ever eaten, I highly suggest trying that when you visit.

Fried Egg
Mushroom Confit

Steak

Pudding Dessert

To top it all off, Chartreuse takes reservations online! If you're a freak like me and can't bare to make a call, you don't have to! You can click here and do it with a few clicks. Instead of worrying about the new hip place, just visit this Detroit staple and we can guarantee that you will have a great meal with great service. And if you're feeling feisty, grab a drink! They are known for their cocktails!

A Hip Chat With Five Pound Snap + A Ticket Giveaway

Album release shows are always a big deal for any band. It's a chance to release a new set of music and it's a fun way to get all of your fans to gather for a special show. Five Pound Snap is releasing their latest album White Birch Lakes at Plav Post this Saturday, March 25th. They have recruited The Kickstand Band, Market and Gray/Bliss to play the show and Martez will be DJing in between the bands to keep the night moving.

We had a chance to chat with Mike O'Brien about the new album and the release show. Check out what he has to say and buy your ticket to the show in advance to save a few dollars! Or, take your chances and enter to win a pair of tickets to the show courtesy of the band. If you would like to enter to win, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #snap. We will draw two lucky people on Saturday morning and those two winners will get to attend the show for free with a friend.

HID- When and where did you record your latest album White Birch Lakes?
Mike O'Brien- "We started recording the album in early September at our drummer's Grandfather's cottage in the woods about 3 hours north of Detroit. Most of the tracking was done there, and we finished up the loose ends at my home studio. The album was finished in mid February."

HID- What is your favorite track on the album and why?
Mike O'Brien- "I think my favorite track on the album is the second single "Lady Gets High". I feel it accurately represents where we intend to take our sound in the future, and I'm really happy with the quality of the recording. It also features our buddy Goode ripping a bari-sax solo at the end, and that really tied the whole thing together."

HID- Why did you decide to host your album release part at the Plav Post?
Mike O'Brien- "We spent quite a while choosing a space to have the release (we wanted to pick a place that bands don't typically have shows at locally), and PLAV just felt right. Good sized room, nice stage, good community feel....and Hamtramck has ALWAYS been so great to Five Pound Snap, so we felt like it would be the best choice for our debut release party."

HID- Why did you pick The Kickstand Band, Market, and Gray/Bliss music to play the show with you?

Mike O'Brien- "We wanted to pick a lineup with a bunch of our friends obviously, but also a lineup with musical variety. Kickstand Band were one of the first bands I saw when I started going to shows in Detroit, and oddly enough we've never shared a bill with them. They've always been very supportive and make some of the most infectious music around, so I'm very stoked to have them. We played a house party in Southwest with Market when they were just starting out, and they instantly blew me away. "Wagon Wheel" has been the soundtrack of my life since 2015, and I can't say I enjoy watching another local group perform live more than them. And I'm so glad Gray/Bliss hopped on the show! Nick Sapounas writes some of the most interesting experimental pop, and those guys are always a blast to play shows with. Very laid back but constantly inspirational to watch them jam."

HID-Your latest band photos feature all of you in a pool, whose pool is it?
Mike O'Brien- "Over the summer, Gwen was house-sitting for a family in Royal Oak, and they have this beautiful pool in their backyard. We were all hanging out there every day swimming and drinking beers, so we figured it would be a chill place to do a shoot. We called up our friend Megan Lacroix to do the shoot, and it turned out great!"

HID- We love the cover of the new album, who designed it?
Mike O'Brien- "The cover was a collaboration between us and or friend TJ Tekip. We provided the art and he did the editing/photoshop business. The windows on the cover are the windows on the top floor of the house where we recorded the album. Our keyboard player Scott took a picture with his phone when he woke up one day, and we all loved the way it looked."

HID- What summer activity are you most looking forward to
Mike O'Brien- "We're looking forward to hitting the road again in May and July! And also swimming, beers, playing volleyball on one of our front lawns, and checking out a bunch of great shows coming to town this summer!"

Win Tickets to Bison Machine's Tour Kick off at Small's

The guys in Bison Machine are packing their bags and hitting the road! The band is gearing up for their spring tour that will take them across the US, with stops throughout the Midwest and even into Texas and Colorado. Before they ravage the country, they will be kicking off their tour at Small's this Friday, March 24th.

In case you aren't familiar with Bison Machine, they are four piece stoner rock band from Hamtramck featuring Casey O'Ryan, Breck Crandell, Tom Stec and Anthony Franchina. If you happened to be at the latest installment of Black Christmas, they played upstairs in the Magic Stick and were one of the best bands of the night, in our opinion. The band currently has a new album in the works, but in the meantime check out their album Hoarfrost below and their other releases on bandcamp here.

It's only $10 to get in to the tour kick off show on Friday night at Small's. Joining Bison Machine on the bill is Cloud Catcher from Denver, Wild Savages, Anguish and Grand Mammoth from Ohio. There will also be DJ sets throughout the night from Heavy and Beyond. If you'd rather save that $10 for a tall boy and a shot, we are also getting a couple of people into this show for free! To enter to win tickets to this show, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #BM in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get to attend the show with a friend for free.

Doors for this one are set to open at 8 p.m. and 21+ are welcome.

Marche du Nain Rouge 2017

In 1702, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French founder of Detroit, claimed he was having dreams of a little red devil. He went to see a fortune teller and was told that devil that he dreamt of was the Nain Rouge, also known as the harbinger of doom. The fortune teller told Antoine that if he choose to settle in the straits between Michigan and Ontario he might turn a profit, but it would be a long uphill battle fraught with setbacks. Eventually, Cadillac saw the little red devil in person and instead of running or cowering in fear he chose to confront him. He chased the Nain Rouge away with a stick. His fatal mistake was to let the Nain see his face. The Nain continued to taunt him nonstop after he settled in those plains; he eventually had to return to France penniless.

Cadillac had courage against all odds and stood up to fight, a defining characteristic of the city he founded, now called Detroit. When Cadillac left for France the Nain Rouge decided to stay on and continue to haunt our city. Every year we gather to chase him out of our city, but we do not make the same mistake that Cadillac made. We remember to cover our faces so that the Nain Rouge won't be able to find us when he returns.

Detroiters, let's meet up this Sunday and chase that little red devil out of our town! If you are ready to stand up for our city, wear your favorite disguise and march up Cass Ave. to chase the Nain Rouge away for another year. We will be meeting at the corner of Cass and Canfield, right next to Traffic Jam & Snug at 12 p.m. For details about the march click here.

Don't Miss Hip In Detroit's New Podcast Featuring The Queen Herself, Jax Anderson

Over the last few months we have invited a variety of Detroit's movers and shakers into our studio at Podcast Detroit to chat with us about all of the hip things that are happening in and around the City of Detroit. Thanks to the generosity of our show's sponsor, M-1 Studios, we have had some interesting conversations with people who work behind the scenes and we have invited some of the city's biggest up and coming acts to chat with us before releasing their next album or playing their next show. This month we have the privilege of taking it to the next level because we have the honor of interviewing one of the city's most influential and inspiring artists right before the release of her new EP and a few weeks before what we anticipate to be one of the most talked about events of 2017.

Hip in Detroit has invited The Queen of Detroit, Miss Jax Anderson a.k.a. Flint Eastwood into the studio to talk to us about her latest EP Broke Royalty which is coming out on April 14th. That is the same night that she will headline at The Fischer in Detroit alongside Tunde Olaniran, SYBLYNG. and Michigander.

The first single off the new album is called "Queen". It was released a few weeks ago and you can check out the music video and the track here,  Her next single "Push" will be released this Thursday, March 23rd, so keep your eyes on social media and give it a listen before you tune in to hear us chat with the Queen herself this Sunday, March 26th at 6 p.m. We plan to go deep and find out everything we can about the new album and what we can expect at the big release show.

Mark your calendars for the live broadcast on Podcastdetroit.com at 6 p.m. this Sunday and head over to Fusion Shows website to guarantee your spot at the huge album release show on April 14th. Tickets are $15 in advance and I can't see any scenario where this one doesn't sell out. We can't wait to take you deep inside the mind of what we consider to be Detroit royalty.

As you probably know by now, the Michigan Science Center hosts some pretty awesome adult only events! Well, this weekend they are holding another one of their super cool after dark events and this time around the theme is time travel.

After Dark: Time Travel will revolve around some of your favorite time travel and sci fi movies, like Back to the Future, Terminator and Dr. Who. There will be a DeLorean on site that you get take a picture in front of, an early prototype of Marty McFly's hovercraft, a planetarium show and more! There will even be a signature drink for the night, the Sonic Screwdriver (inspired by Dr. Who). On top of all of the special events, you'll also get to explore the science center throughout the evening, with a slightly smaller crowd than on a normal day.

This is all happening this Thursday, March 16th. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. and 21+ are welcome to attend. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance here. You can also purchase tickets at the door on Thursday night.
