Celebrate 10 Years of Haute to Death at The Red Bull House of Art this Friday

Ten years ago Ash Nowak and Jon Dones joined forces to create a new monthly gathering called Haute to Death. The all-inclusive dance party was before its time and it has defined Detroit nightlife and culture throughout the last ten years. The duo are designers of one of a kind moments, the most sought after and hardest to find commodities on the planet. More importantly, they are both artists who have curated and captured a decade of Detroit night life through photography and art, and in honor of their 10th birthday, they are ready to share their magic with the world.

Haute To Death will be debuting a new art show at the Red Bull House of Art this Friday, Febuary 2nd. They have combed through the last ten years of moments and they will be showcasing the most enchanting ones with all of us at Deca/Dance this Friday. The gallery opening will run from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Then the party will move over to The Outer Limits, where Ash and Jon will be celebrating until 2 am.

To keep up with what's Haute follow the duo here.

Hip in Detroit Checks Out Joebar

We've been meaning to stop by Joebar ever since it opened its door in Hazel Park last March. The unassuming space serves up original cocktails, dip sandwiches, and cold beer. Their finely curated menu features soup, salad, a few sandwiches, a few sides and a couple of dessert options, but it also somehow seems to have something for everyone. Personally, I wanted to stop int to try their BBQ Jackfruit Burger. While many restaurants are beginning to offer a vegan option on their menus, few are stepping outside the comfort of a black bean or impossible burger.

This restaurant features open seating and patrons can take a spot anywhere they can find a table. That means that there is a good chance that you might be sharing a table with another couple and you might have to spend some time hanging out at the bar before you can get a seat. But don't worry, they let you grab a cocktail while you are waiting and  have a few couches and chairs to make you more comfortable while you do.

We were lucky and immediately scored a spot at the bar where our server promptly gave us menus and explained how things worked. We started the night with a round of cocktails and I was delighted by their cider cocktail feature that included McClary's Drinking Vinegar and while strong, it went down way too easy.

For our main meal, we each ordered a sandwich with both regular and sweet potato fries on the side.  My Jackfruit burger was more delightful then I could have ever imagined and the fries, while salty, were also delicious. They were just a little well done and crunchy, exactly how I like them. The house fries were skinny and long while the sweet potatoes fries were fat and short, I liked both, but would definitely go with the sweet potato fries if I had to choose. My dining mate enjoyed the BLT with avacado and tried a bite of my sandwich out of curiosity.  After she sampled both she declared that when she came back she would definitely be ordering the Jackfruit sandwich, despite her love of meat.

We both grabbed a second round of drinks and couldn't finish all of the food that we were given.  When the bill came I was even more pleased to find out that the drinks, food, and sides were all very reasonably priced and two specialty drinks and a full meal only cost me around $30. I would highly suggest visiting Joebar the next time you want to have a good drink and unique meal in a low key place with solid service, alcohol, and desserts!

Joebar is located at 23839 John R. in Hazel Park. The bar also features special menus and events, you can keep up with what they are up to here.

Celebrate the Redford Theatre's 90th Anniversary

On January 27, 1928, the Redford Theatre opened its doors in Detroit. The movie theatre was known for its uniqueness, with Japanese inspired decor that you can still see today. Although the theatre has changed looks and owners over the years, it has remained open and in operation for the last 90 years. It lasted through many transitions and has seen a lot of history, getting its start when silent films were still in production. But, the organ that accompanied those silent movies is still used today, and the decor has been restored, giving the theatre the look and feel from when movie goers first filled the seats.

If you've never been to the Redford Theatre before, it is truly an awesome experience. Throughout the year classics, old and new, are shown on the screen. The organ player entertains the crowd before the film begins and again at intermission. The decor is beautiful, from the artwork on the walls, to the antique seats, to the twinkling ceiling, making you feel as though you are watching a movie under the stars.

This Saturday, January 27th, you have the chance to celebrate 90 years of this amazing place right on the Redford Theatre's actual birthday. To celebrate this monumental anniversary, the theatre will be showing That's Entertainment, starring Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Fred Astaire, among other big names. Tickets to see the movie are only $5 and can be purchased in advance here. As with any birthday party there will be cake, as well as a ton of great history and stories. The movie is set to start a bit earlier than usual, with a 7 p.m. showtime. So make sure to get there early for this big celebration and enjoy this awesome venue.

24 Hour Ticket Giveaway: Candlebox at St. Andrew's Hall

In the early 90's Candlebox hit the scene and took over the radio waves. Their songs "Far Behind" and "You", off their debut self-titled album, got a ton of radio play and plenty of air time on MTV. The band has released six studio albums over the years, although their first album still holds up as their most popular release. They took a break for a few years in the early 2000's, but Candlebox is still going strong. They're hitting stages throughout the US this year in celebration of their 25th anniversary, and this week they are headed to Detroit.

Candlebox will be playing at St. Andrew's Hall this Friday, January 26th. Joining them on the bill are The Lows, from right here in Detroit. Tickets for the show start at $35 and can be purchased in advance here. You can also enter to win a pair of tickets by sending your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #candlebox in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and will send them details on how to claim their prize.

Hip in Detroit Waxes Poetic with Jarrett From Jett Plastic February 4th!

Flyer designed by the extremely talented @monsterfreedesign
Technology has rendered many of the things we once loved obsolete. I have a box of tapes that I have no way to play and a few shelves of CDs that I can't bring myself to part with, but the truth is that both items are relatively useless in this new digital age. One of the only things that have survived the changing times is records. Music fans that prefer vinyl will go out of their way to get their favorite albums on record even though it might be one of the most inconvenient ways to listen to music. They know that there is simply nothing like it.

Jett Plastic Recordings is a record label built by someone who simply loves records. Jarrett Koral is a passionate music lover and collector that has built a small album empire right here in Detroit. He has put out records from lots of bands, including The Idiot Kids and the infamous Corey Feldman. So, we have asked Jarrett to sit down with us live on PodcastDetroit.com on February 4th at 6 p.m. to talk about all things vinyl. We can't wait to hear his story and share it with all of you! If you have any questions that you would like to hear us ask Jarrett live on the air, please email them to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #askjarrett. You can tune in live on the 4th at 6 p.m. by clicking here. You can find out which studio we are in on that day by following us on Instagram here and you can listen to all of our previous podcasts by clicking here

Thousands of People Rally at The Capitol to Bring Power to the Polls this November

Thousands of people gathered in Lansing on Sunday afternoon to mark the one year anniversary of The Women's March, the largest one day action in US history. The purpose of the gathering was to encourage women to bring their power to polls this November by ensuring women vote, run for office, and become leaders within their communities and workplaces.

The eclectic lineup of speakers included immigrant rights advocate Cindy Garcia, Nicole Denson, a social justice activist from Wayne County SAFE, Emily Durbin, Michigan chapter leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, LaShawn Erby, a founding member of Black Lives Matter's Lansing branch, Gayle Hamilton, head of the Labor Studies Center and the Labor School at Wayne State University, Jeynce Poindexter, Transgender Victims Advocate for Equality Michigan, Chia Morgan, coordinator for Well of Hope, Dizzy Warren from the Michigan Consumers for Healthcare coalition, Lilianna Reyes, a transgender Latina woman with has a background working with marginalized communities, Fatou-Seydi Sarr, founder of African Bureau for Immigration and Social affairs, and Sheerin Siddique, a Metro Detroit advocate for survivors of violence against women. Their speeches focused on indigenous peoples rights and the lack of diversity and inclusivity in traditional feminists actions, including last years march. They encouraged attendees to use their privilege to elevate black women to positions of power and to listen when they tell us about their unique experiences and concerns. They also discussed the struggles of our trans sisters and their right to have their voices heard within this movement. Finally, they examined the rights of immigrants and victims of assault and what we can do to make sure that someday no one has to say #metoo anymore.
It was a powerful day for feminists to come together to celebrate the changes that we have made over the last year and the changes that need to be made for us to continue the fight and move forward. I was inspired by how hard the organizers worked to let the voices of underrepresented women lead the movement and I hope that we continue to make sure that these voices are finally heard and taken seriously because it is vital to this movement's existence.

This Sunday The Women's March Unites To Bring Power To The Polls

On January 20th, 2017 Donald Trump was sworn into office as the 45th President of The United States of America. The following day, the largest single-day protest in the history of the United States took place. Five million women, men, and gender non-conforming people all over the world took the streets in protest of the new administration. Protesting has, after all, always been the most American way of showing your disapproval. It's also a way of coming together with like-minded individuals to show the world that we all believe that things can be better. In the weeks after the Women's March, we would begin to talk about some of the progressive movements' most deep-rooted issues, including the lack of intersectionality displayed during the march and what needed to be done to make real change. What we didn't realize at the time was that the march was just the begging of a shift in America.

For the first time in our lifetime, we are finally having some real conversations. The election of Donald Trump catapulted The Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movement into the everyday lives of most Americans and changed the way that we look at and talk about these issues. On Sundays, we watched the NFL take a knee to take a stand, and our Facebook feeds were filled with testimonies of all the abuses that the people we love have experienced throughout their lifetime. For the first time, the curtain of bullshit is being pulled back, the users and abusers are being weeded out.

Yes, Donald is still in charge, but the question now is for how long? The midterm election is only a mere 10 months away and we could make some big moves to further minimize the President's power to effectively make changes that many of us don't want to see. So, to make sure that things keep moving forward, The Women's March is asking everyone to come together one year later to celebrate bringing Power to the Polls this November. This year's action is focused on encouraging women to run for office and become a bigger part of the process. The Power to The Polls gathering will take place in Lansing this Sunday, November 21st at 2 pm. It is an opportunity to show your displeasure and to connect with like-minded individuals so that we can continue meeting, talking and making real changes. To learn more about this march click here.

Snag a Pair of Tickets to the First Ever Pizza Throwdown

Last year, Slow Roll Co-Founder Jason Hall made a pledge to eat pizza every day for an entire year. He called his journey Pizza 365, and he stuck to it. Jason shared his daily choices on social media, ranging from classics like Buddy's Pizza to the occasional slice from Whole Foods in Detroit. After eating pizza every day for an entire year, he touched every corner on the pizza spectrum here in Detroit and we can definitely say, this guy knows his pizza.

So, it seems only fitting that after eating pizza for 365 days, Hall would want to eat more pizza! He is one of the people behind a new event that revolves around this delicious cheesy meal, sharing some of the best pizza joints in Detroit with thousands of people all under roof. The event is being called The Pizza Throwdown and it's happening on Sunday, February 11th in Shed 5 at the Eastern Market

"The event is the opportunity for pizza connoisseurs from all over to share stories and adventures that they’ve had through pizza and to experience all the creativity that truly goes into pizza." With paid admission, you will get to sample 5 sample size slices, from a selection of some of the best pizzerias around. Additional full slices will be available for purchase, as well as drinks at a full bar. There will be tunes provided by DJ Tom T and the shed will be full of delicious smells and people that love pizza. What could be better?

Tickets for the Pizza Throwdown start at just $15 and are available in advance here. Soon, the price will increase to $20 though, once the limited amount of early bird tickets sell out. So make sure you snag your tickets up sooner rather than later! We are also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky reader, so you and your friend can get into this awesome pizza party for free! To enter, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #pizza in the subject line.

If there's anything we know for sure about Jason Hall, this guy knows his stuff about pizza and he knows how to bring a crowd together. So we're sure The Pizza Throwdown will be epic! For more information on this awesome event and to see the growing list of pizzerias participating, head over to ThePizzaThrowdown.com.

Show Review: The Killers @ The Masonic Temple

Photo Credit: Rob Loud - @RobLoud
Monday night, The Killers played to a packed house at The Detroit Masonic Temple. The band kicked the night off with their single "Run for Cover" off their latest release Wonderful, Wonderful. Visuals from the music video projected on the screen behind them, showing fans, this wasn't going to be just a basic rock show. Instead, the performance was accompanied by lasers, lights, a giant screen, and a trio of female backup singers, making for more of an arena experience inside the walls of this historic venue. After kicking things off with a new one, The Killers then played a string of their older radio hits, as well as a ton of songs off Sam's Town, their 2006 release, still one of their most popular albums to date.
For fans old and new, this was an excellent show from start to finish. The Killers were full of energy and promised the crowd that they would try their best to put on an awesome rock show, and that they did. The band blended their newer hits, like "The Man" in with old favorites, rather than splitting the show up between old and new, or making fans wait until the end of the show to hear the big songs. To round the night off, this band played a true encore, leaving fans cheering for minutes straight before reappearing on stage. The encore set is something that has become entirely to predictable at shows over the years, with many bands stepping to the side of the stage for mere seconds before coming out for a few more songs. The Killers made sure that their fans showed that they wanted to hear more, and the fans weren't going anywhere until that happened. The night ended with one of the band's most popular songs, "Mr. Brightside", which still holds up as a great song 14 years later.

It had been a while since The Killers played in Detroit proper, but next time they come to town, their show is definitely worth checking out. In the mean time, check out their new album Wonderful Wonderful and while you're at it, revisit a few of the band's old favorites below. You can also check out a few clips from the night by visiting us on instagram, @hipindetroit.

Win Tickets to See Destroyer at the Magic Stick

Destroyer just kicked off their North American Tour by releasing a new video for the song "Stay Lost"off the band's latest album, Ken. The Vancouver based rock band works hard to make sure that none of their albums sound exactly the same. So, if you haven't heard Ken yet, watch the first music video to get a feel for this album.

If you like what you see/hear you can see the band perform live this Sunday, January 21st at the Magic Stick in Detroit. Mega Bog will be opening the show and tickets to attend the show are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show. We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of AEG Detroit. If you would like to enter to win, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #destroyer. We will draw one lucky person this weekend and they will get to attend the set with a friend for free.

24 Hour Giveaway: Win Tickets to See the Squirrel Nut Zippers at El Club

Swing music was huge in the 30's and 40's, but thanks to bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the genre had a resurgence in the 90's. One of the most popular songs at that time was a song called "Hell" by a band called the Squirrel Nut Zippers. The song was played all the time on radio and TV, you can take a trip down memory lane below.

You can also revisit the 90's by heading out to El Club this Wednesday to catch the Squirrel Nut Zippers live on El Club's killer sound system. Tickets to attend the show are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of the bad ass booking team over at Party Store Productions. If you would like to enter to win a pair of tickets to swing dance this Wednesday away with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #swing. We will draw one lucky person in the morning and they will get to attend the show with a friend for free!

Win Tickets to Thaw Out with RV Mendoza this Friday

Admit it, you've been staying home a little more than you should. It's been extra cold out these past few weeks, which makes it extra difficult to drag yourself out after the sun goes down. But, it's not healthy to stay locked up all winter, so RV Mendoza decided to give us all a reason that have to leave our houses this Friday.

RV wants to help us all THAW out. He has curated the perfect dance party to get everyone's ass on the floor. This all-inclusive event will feature performances by RV, Supercoolwicked and Tim Schumack. The night will also feature a DJ set by Jordache.

Tickets to attend the dance party are only $5 in advance and $10 at the door. We'd say that's a pretty small fee for a guaranteed good night, but just to make someone's night extra special, we are also going to give away two tickets to the show. If you would like to enter to win a pair of tickets for you and a friend to attend the party for free, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #thaw. We will draw one lucky winner this Friday and we will see them at the show. After all, we need a night out too, and if you know RV, you know that this isn't one to be missed.

***This show has been moved to The Magic Stick!***
