The first chocolate chip cookie was baked in 1939 by a woman named Ruth Graves Wakefield. Ruth owned "Toll House" restaurant and one day when she ran out of bakers chocolate, she cut a chocolate bar into pieces and added it to the mix to replace the missing ingredient. Instead of finding a replacement, she created a whole new sensation called the Toll House Chocolate Chip cookie. 75 years later you can still find that recipe on the back of most Nestle products.
These days there are thousands of different varieties of cookies out there and a million different brands that you can try. But, not all cookies are created equal and it can be hard to find something that is special and unique. A new bakery/cafe called Detroit Cookie Co. is hoping to change that by bringing a whole new approach to cookie making to Ferndale.
The new cafe & cookie house is the creation of Lauren Roumayah, a young cookie creator that credits her mom for her love of baking. She has put together a creative menu of cookie choices, that includes flavors like The Big 3, made with Better Made potato chips and Michigan dried cherries, and the Mad Mix, which features Better Made Sweet BBQ Potato Chips and Butterfinger bars. She also has all the staples, including everyone's favorite, chocolate chip cookies. In addition to unique cookies, the shop also roasts its own coffee beans that they serve bagged up and freshly brewed. The cafe even caters to gluten-free and vegan patrons by providing fresh vegan dough to cook up anytime you're craving a treat. Or, you can call an order in and they will have it ready for you!

I recently stopped by the store to try out their dough for myself and ended up leaving with enough dough to make a dozen vegan chocolate chip cookies to enjoy with friends and family over the holidays. After freezing the freshly scooped dough for a few days after purchasing it, I put it onto trays and cooked it for 15 minutes at 350 degrees to enjoy some of the best cookies I have ever tasted. Everyone who tried one of the cookies was just as impressed as I was, especially since they were vegan! I am not sure how she created this specific cookie mix, but it was perfect and melted in my mouth!
Detroit Cookie Company carries about 20 fresh cookie varieties at any given time, They also take special orders for large events and if you need something for a party, they can take care of you. Their cookies start around $4 a piece and they are worth every penny, especially if you are like me and have no idea how to bake up something that someone else will want to eat. So, the next time you are in Ferndale, stop by the store and try a cookie and a cup of coffee for yourself. The cafe is located on Woodward just south of Pleasant Ridge and the space has its own parking lot, so you can just pop in. While you're there, say hi to Lauren, she is usually there baking away and making people smile by sharing her love of cookies with them!
