Detroit Welcomes the First Women's Comedy Festival

Female comedians have never gotten the credit they deserve. Instead, they have had to work twice as hard and be twice as funny to get the recognition that they have earned. Fortunately, things are changing and the females aren't taking the second seat at the table anymore. We are out there creating our own rules and changing the way everything is done. Comedy was another boys club that was bound to come to an end. So, why not help the inevitable along by celebrating funny women?

The first ever Detroit Women of Comedy Festival wants to do just that! The four day celebration of funny females will features over 150 female comedians, improvisers, and performers, including a few recognizable names like Mama’s Boy (Second City Hollywood), with special guest Stephanie Courtney, “Flo the Progressive Lady", Maribeth Monroe (The Good Place, Workaholics), Nancy Hayden (Detroiters), Jaime Moyer (KC Undercover), Shantira Jackson (BET’s 50 Central), and Christy Bonstell (Shameless, APB).

There are tons of different events running each day of the festival, this includes classes, lectures, readings, stand up, and improv. Tickets can either be purchased for individual events or you can buy a weekend pass and come and go as you please. All of the events will take place in Hamtramck at Ghost Light, Ant Hall, Bank Suey, and Planet Ant. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Girls Rock Detroit to help support the next generation of bad ass females. Help Shape the Future of Assemble U

In 2015, the founders of Assemble Sound took a risk. They decided that if they built it, artists would come. They opened the doors of the church in 2015 with very little money and a lot of hope. Slowly and surely they cleaned up the space.,bought some recording equipment, and put the call out that they were looking to link up with artists. A few years later they were hosting listening parties for albums that were created right inside their doors by some of Detroit's biggest up and coming artists, including acts like Tunde Olaniran, Sam Austins, Flint Eastwood, and more recently, for up and coming performers like Curtis Roach and NYDGE. Since their meager beginnings, they have made some monumental moves and music that will outlast anything any of us. They have helped change the conversation about what it means to be an artist in the City of Detroit and they have thrown some legendary parties. They have also hosted some free events to help artists in the community take the next steps in their journey. These "classes" are called Assemble U and until now each one of them had a theme or topic. This time around they are hosting an open forum discussion to decide the future of Assemble U. So, if you want to meet other artists, learn more, Assemble, and shape the future of the conversation, head up to the Church this Thursday at 6:30 and speak up!

This Sunday afternoon brunch returns to Small's in Hamtramck. The Small's crew will be serving up delicious dishes to get your Sunday started off right. The bar has only done a few of these pop-ups so far, but they're already getting rave reviews. Mike Mouyianis has been known to make some great food over the years, so we're sure that he has come up with an amazing menu for this Sunday's brunch. In the past, he has served up items like quiche, avocado toast, and chick in waffle (two Belgian waffles with crispy chicken inside, served with jalapeno maple syrup). This weekend's menu hasn't been officially announced yet, but it sounds like the chick in waffle will make the cut again, along with items like poutine and a killer breakfast burrito.

Sunday's brunch will kick off at noon this Sunday and runs until 4 p.m. Keep an eye on the Facebook event page here to see the menu when it is announced. Treat yourself this Sunday!

Reilly Craft Creamery will Host a Pop-Up at Trinosophes in Eastern Market Starting this Saturday!

One of my all time favorite fat girl activities is grabbing a cone on a hot summer day. But, with this new vegan diet, I was getting worried about how likely that was going to be when the warm weather hit. But, thanks to Trinosophes and Reilly Craft Creamery, I no longer have to worry. I will have an awesome option and so will all of you. The Eastern Market custom ice cream makers will be serving handmade soft serve ice cream inside homemade waffle cones all summer long. This includes dairy and non dairy options!
Reilly Craft Creamery will be popping up inside Trinosophes on Saturdays from 1 p.m. until 7
p.m. every Saturday, May 26th through June 16th. Their pop up shop will feature at least six different flavors, including (V) Raspberry, (V) Chocolate Deluxe, (V) Raspberry-Chocolate Swirl, Sea Salt Caramel, Cold Brew, and Sea Salt Caramel - Cold Brew Swirl. They have just as many vegan options as they have "regular" options, so there is no reason the whole group can't leave happy!

Wor$hip Detroit

There's a new apparel company in town for fans of tattoos and awesome art! Wor$hip Detroit is the brain child of Adam Nagy, a local illustrator, designer, and tattoo artist. The shirts feature Nagy's artwork, taking inspiration from his life and career. They act as a canvas for designs that he creates as chest or back pieces. The plus side is, you can wear his awesome designs for the day, instead of having them on you permanently. Plus, you get to change them out when you want to and the cost is quite a bit less than getting ink.

We had a chance to catch up with Nagy to get the scoop on this new line and the idea behind it. Read ahead to see what he had to say.
HID- What is Wor$hip Detroit and how did you come up with the name?
Adam Nagy- "Wor$hip is currently an apparel line that I came up with in October during my Illustration and Design II class, with Stephen Schudlich (itsfinnished.com), in my final semester at College for Creative Studies. I obtained my BFA towards Illustration where the field of branding illustration interested me, so I turned that class into creating my own brand. The name came from every aspect of my routine life for over four years: Full-Time school, which I was paying for in cash while the student loans built up, the gasoline to get to school, the constant art supply consuming, rent payments, eating hand-to-mouth from only Part-Time tattooing income, material possession bills, Hallmark holiday gifts, dates, alcohol to keep me going, and so on. I’m not religious, but I felt controlled by what seemed like a higher power, the currency that ran my daily (and future) life is worshiping money. The word ‘worship’ and the symbol for the dollar sign centered. I want my website name to be wor$hip.com, but domains don’t accept $pecial character$, thus Worship from the land of Détroit dot net it is."

HID- What made you want to start a clothing line?
Adam Nagy- "Shirts are just the baller on a budget starting point! My favorite instructor at CCS, Dave Chow, was asked to create designs for a startup clothing line around two years ago. He could’ve killed it, but he knew it suited my art style, so he gave me the gig. That group of guys wanted a Rat Fink/Kustom Kulture/Shawn Dickinson look that my pass time doodling falls into. After that job, came another shirt design, and another logo for a tee, and some more visuals for a hoodie, and underwear, then some socks, onto hats, and so on. I liked that my work was getting around on products, but I only received an initial design payment and never got to see who was buying what and wearing what. I wanted to be the investigator of seeing my “clientele” and conveniently the piercer at my shop (Studio SEVEN Tattoos) screen prints through his business Seven Graphics."

HID- Where do you get the inspiration for the designs?
Adam Nagy- "People that can’t afford tattoos over a thousand dollars. All of my designs are how I ink tattoo stencils, which would be my outlines for large back pieces, thighs, and possibly chests. For example, a portion of the Pe₮ design (the three eyed sphynx) was tattooed many months before I had my pen on paper creations on shirts, but that was a three-hour tattoo, at $120 per hour, and only the eighth of the shirt design. The logo came first, then the ideations were written down. The inspiration for the Black Mariah designs came from playing poker. I was out close to $100 in the game called Follow the Bitch, where the queen of spades being dealt means all players’ hands are redrawn. This kept forcing me to toss away my great hands and my earnings. In the final round, before everyone decided to call it a night, my all-in hand turned my anguish from the queen, known as Black Mariah, into deciding she’s okay in my book and should be my first line of designs. In the illustrations I aimed for viewers not liking her rude actions, but thinking she could do something positively badass."

HID- How long have you been a tattoo artist?
Adam Nagy- "I got into my tattoo apprenticeship in November of 2011. It’s a wild and wacky trade of love and hate. Currently I’m on a steady five, or six, days of tattooing per week so far in 2018."

HID- What is your least favorite thing to tattoo?
Adam Nagy- "Anything someone else already has. It takes imagination, or good drugs, from people to request ideas like a classy pizza fencing a donut in a top hat, and those suggestions are fun to draw and funner to tattoo! Even a mundane request like an individual rose can be turned into excitement for me if I can run my style, but when someone shows me a screenshot on their phone and says, “I want this. Exactly this. Don’t create a rendition in your own style of art. Trace this on me.,” it takes the ‘artist’ out of ‘tattoo artist.’"

HID- What are your plans for Wor$hip?
Adam Nagy- "Sell shirts. In the future I want to expand to printing dad hats, snapbacks, wallets, underwear, bags, postcards, posters, stickers, backpacks, giftcards, socks, jackets, flannels, lanyards, sunglasses, pens, bottle openers, phone cases, beer pong tables, videogame controllers, beer mugs, growlers, disc golfs, vinyl wrapped cars; I want my art on everything! Wor$hip is the name, Adam Nagy is the designer+illustrator, and the products are endless! Before my emotions take over my logic, or my income over my well being, I’d like to build a team of professionals that’ll photograph models+clothing, vector my designs, ship my apparel, update the inventory, advise me, make changes to my website, and all of the things that I’m not experienced in. Being the boss, the behind the scenes creative is my ideal position!"

HID- How often do you plan to release new designs?
Adam Nagy- "I’ll let the demand decide. Presently, I have three future “worshiping money” lines in mind; sticking to five designs, in black and white (possible variations of purple), for each."

HID- Where can people purchase your goods?
Adam Nagy- "www.worshipdetroit.net or by stopping into Studio Seven Tattoos Tuesdays through Saturdays, from noon to 7PM, where I store the arsenal of tees."

HID- Any plans to sell apparel in stores or at shows?
Adam Nagy- "Most definitely, but I haven’t stepped into the researching portion of who, what, where, when, or how to contact vendors and event coordinators."

HID- What else would you like our readers to know?
Adam Nagy- "My shirts are cool, and they’ll make you look cool, so wear one or twelve! Buy Wor$hip."
You can pick up your own Wor$hip shirt for the low price of $20 by clicking here. Make sure you also follow Wor$hip on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with this brand and see new styles and products.

Win Tickets to See Chrome at Outer Limits

In the 1970s Chrome got its start in the rock world by not really fitting the mold of any genre. Celebrate the Arrival of The Companion in Campus Martius

A new piece of art has been added to Downtown Detroit this week. A seventeen foot statue of two characters that resemble Mickey Mouse was purchased by Big Daddy Dan to stand tall in the heart of Campus Martius. The artist's works have gone for upwards of a million dollars, but this piece was donated to the city by the Gilbert, so the cost is unknown. The statue, which was created by a New York artist names KAWS, will host its official welcoming party Tuesday night at the Library Street Collective. But, before we talk about the party, we want to let you know a little bit more about the man behind the art.

KAWS was born in New Jersey in 1974. He started his career as a cartoon artist on shows like Daria and Doug before moving to New York to pursue his career as a painter and graffiti artist. He has created lots of different characters and cartoons over the years, many of them are distorted versions of their more famous counterparts. The character depicted in the new statue is called Companion. The artist created this character in 1999 and it is known around the world. In fact, there are statues of it in China, Switzerland, and London. KAWS' work has been featured in the MOMA, it has been turned into a moon man for the MTV awards, made into a balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and it has been plastered all over t-shirts and skate decks. His work starts conversations and appeals to all different types of people.

You can meet the artist and celebrate the statue's arrival in Detroit tonight (Tuesday, May 22nd) at The Library Street Collective from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. There will also be an after party at The Skip with the artist from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Music will be provided by Nothing Elegant.

All Hail Betsey Johnson!

Last Saturday the Michigan fashionistas were out in full force. Macy's Somerset hosted an in-store appearance and shopping event that featured everyone's favorite fun designer, Miss Betsey Johnson. Fans began lining up promptly at 10 a.m. when the store opened and the crowd screamed when she finally came down the escalator to greet her fans just after 2 p.m. But, before she greeted her fans, Hip in Detroit got the chance to sit down and have a chat with Betsey behind the scenes.
Betsey took over a small room in the executive offices of Macy's and began making hats on the fly while she got ready for her appearance. The teeny, tiny fashion designer was a fun and fabulous as her clothing. Betsey talked about her favorite fashion dos and don'ts and what made her a successful business women for the last half a century. Check out out 6 minutes with the star and scope all the great shots of fans that we took during the event!

Eastern Market Hosts Its 51st Flower Day this Sunday

Flower Day is coming to the Eastern Market this Sunday, May 20th. The 50+ year old tradition is the perfect place to pick up all of your indoor and outdoor plants for the season. The usually vibrant market becomes even more full of life as Metro Detroiters flood into the sheds to pick up all of their favorite Spring and Summer flowers at a growers price. There are flats and flats of flowers and lots of farmers that are ready to make a deal. If you want to decorate your garden and take it to the next level this year, Flower Day is the perfect day to make it happen.

Flower Day will take place from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. this Sunday, May 20th. There is usually a lot of traffic off the highway, so plan accordingly!  Parking is generally free in the market, but can be difficult to find. This hand map will show you were to look, but if all else fails, wear some walking shoes, bring a wagon and plan to get a little exercise. Don't forget! The market is OPEN EVERY SATURDAY all year round and they ALWAYS have flowers. So, if you don't want to mess with the traffic, come back next week and spend a few extra dollars to get all of your flowers and some locally grown veggies!

Win Tickets to the Legendary Detroit Dio Tribute

Cancer is a bullshit disease that has taken the life of way too many people that we love. The disease doesn't care if you're young or old, rich or poor, or a legendary rock star. It is merciless and treats us all the same. But, sometimes we have the last laugh because cancer might be able to take away the people we love, but it cannot make us forget them. In 2010 cancer took the life of legendary rock star Ronnie James Dio, but it wasn't able to silence his voice. Ronnie's fans have come up with a fun way to come together to say fuck you to the disease by gathering to remember his life by rocking out to some of his music. This yearly gathering is a way to honor the rock star while raising money to continue to fight the disease that took him off the stage.

This year's tribute show will take place on Saturday, May 19th at The Loving Touch and will feature performances by Banned from Hell, Evil Play, Rainbow Rising, Rock and Roll Children, The Black Drops, The Whiskey Charmers, and Alienstorm. The bands will be performing music from Ronnie's entire career, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his solo stuff. Comedian Tom McCarthy will be hosting the show and this year's profits will be donated to Lenny Earls, a local musician who is undergoing throat cancer treatment. Tickets to attend the show are only $10 and they can be purchased in advance here. If you are unable to attend the show but want to donate to help Lenny anyways, click here.

We also have one pair of tickets to giveaway to the show courtesy of JSB Productions. If you would like to enter to win please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #fuckcancer.  We will draw one lucky person the day of the show and they will get to attend for free!

Meet Betsey Johnson at Somerset this Saturday

Betsey Johnson has been a fashion icon for decades. Most trends come and go, but her eye for the over the top and her ability to stay true to herself has kept her brand going for almost half a century. In the 60's and 70's she dressed Edie Sedgwick when she ran around town with Andy and in the 90's she changed style forever when she put Lisa Loeb in one of her little black dresses for the video Stay.

At the turn of the century, she became the only upscale designer that made fun things for women who still wanted to feel great and stand out in a crowd. This trendsetting black sheep of the fashion industry has done what most designers cannot. She has stayed relevant and stayed ahead of everyone else in the game, which is why it will be so special to meet her in person at Macy's at Somerset this Saturday, May 19th. Betsey will be making an in-store appearance at Macy's from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to take pictures and say hello to her die hard fans. To meet the queen of color you can come to Macy's to shop her latest line. If you make a $50 purchase, you will qualify to receive a special gift bag filled with goodies and to take a snap with Betsey. To find out more about the event click here.
