This
Friday night,
Red Bull House of Art will celebrate the art of its last three residents. Over the past 5 years, RBHOA has hosted residencies for artists from around the world, giving them the freedom to work on their art. Their opening exhibitions have all been epic, not only because they featured amazing art work, but because Red Bull knows how to throw an awesome party! Although this is the last group of residents as we know it, Red Bull isn't going anywhere. They will now be known as Red Bull Arts Detroit and will continue to support artists with residencies. They will also help artists out with grants now and they even will be adding writers into the mix. But, before they kick all of that off, they need send these last three artists off.
Friday's opening exhibition will feature the art of
Jason Pulgarin,
Debbie Manville, and
Nathan Smith. Pulgarin is Brooklyn born and now abides in LA. He is "known for his brightly colored and highly stylized figurative works on paper but is also deeply rooted in the graffiti and mural subculture." Manville's art features "a palette of bright colors, gradients, and odd shapes" making artwork that reminds us of the 80s, but with a modern twist. Smith draws inspiration from the graffiti of LA and for his current work, he "uses shapes and textures as a binary code creating clouds of hieroglyphic texts that float through his pieces." All three artists have their own style, but their work compliments each other. You can see it for yourself this Friday night.
The party starts at 7 p.m. this Friday night and will run until 10 p.m. If you can't make it out to opening night, you can see the work of these artists on display every Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. through September 2nd.
