Win Tickets to Ooh La La Lucha 6!!!

Have you ever heard of the annual Ooh La La Lucha party in Detroit? This unique event pairs wrestling, with burlesque, drinking, live music and more. There is literally something for everyone and something new to see on every stage. We have attended all five of the last years and cannot wait to go back for our sixth time this Saturday, May 4th. So we wanted to make sure that all of you heard about it before it sells out, because it always sells out.

Ooh La La Lucha is the brainchild of the Working Class Outlaws a restaurant group in Ferndale, Michigan that owns and manages some of your favorite spots, including Public House, Imperial, and the recently opened Antihero. If you have been inside any of the aforementioned spaces you know that these people aren't afraid to step outside the box and have a little fun.

Ooh La La Lucha is their annual let loose party and this year's performers are bigger and better than ever before. WWE wrestler Último Dragón, Sam Adonis, and the 2018 champion Mysterious Movado will all be stepping into the ring. Roxi D’Lite, Jessabelle Thunder and Evil Hate Monkey will be seducing the crowd and KRILLIN and Mariachi el Reefermen will be providing the tunes. BOTH bands are must-sees so it's pretty cool to have them in the same place!
Tickets to attend the event are $40-$75 in advanc, but we have a pair to give away to one lucky reader! If you would like to enter to come to get weird at St. Andrew's Hall during La La Lucha, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #oohlala. One lucky person will get to attend the festivities with a friend for free.

Doors for this event open at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.

Did You Know They Launched a New Menu at Public House?

In 2012, the Working Class Outlaws opened Imperial on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Michigan. Just over a year later, they opened Public House down the street on 9 Mile and last year, at the end of 2018, they opened a third restaurant next door on 9 Mile called Antihero. All three restaurants serve out of this world food and have their own cool vibe. Imperial is the home of So-Cal style tacos and sides, Anti Hero is a perfect fusing of Japanese and American, and Public House is traditional American fare with a twist.

But, having opened three great spaces in a matter of 6 years wasn't enough for this team. After they launched Anti Hero a few months ago, they got ready to do an entire menu revamp at Public House. That menu revamp includes getting rid of their sliders and going to full burgers as well as shifting the focus of their menu from little bites to bigger full-sized meals. They also added a lot more vegan options to their menu which means that I had an even bigger reason to go back and see what they had to offer.

I am pleased to say that the new menu is a big upgrade for Public House. The Impossible Burger is made with a pretzel bun, vegan thousand islands, and the meltiest and most delicious vegan cheese. The pretzel bun alone makes it better than 99% of the burgers we have ever had, but then you add in the cheese and the sauce and it takes it over the top. I would say it is the best Impossible in town. I also tried the Prickles, a vegan fried pickle with dipping sauce. It's been a long time since I had a good fried appetizer and I really enjoyed this one. I topped off my meal with Estelle, a tequila-based cocktail that was very sweet, but also had a little kick to it. It was good, but I could only have one because like I said, it was very sweet. Overall I was very pleased with the new menu and I think that this was an awesome new upgrade to something that was already solid. I cannot wait to see what the WCO do next!

Meet Josie Pace

Detroit has always been home to raw and original talent. We are a breeding ground for strong artists who have a vision that they can carry through to the stage and present to the world. We created Motown and made major impacts on hip hop and rock and roll, we were also a mecca for garage rock just a decade ago. A lot of people have speculated about what makes Detroit a melting pot for creative magic and they have come up with a lot of reasons, including our weather, our winters, and our deep connection to the car companies for the last century. But those are only contributing factors, the truth is that Detroit artists are unapologetic. They aren't afraid to have a vision and to carry it out, even if it's not what's popular right now. Why not make it the next big thing? The recipe is simple, mix some raw talent with ruthless drive and determination to get something that no one has ever heard before. The DMAs are an appropriate time of year to reflect on the local music scene and to explore who and what is going to make a major impact on the sounds of the city. So, we wanted to tell you about an up and coming Detroit artist that has already made a mark for herself by being nominated for one at this Friday's event, her name is Josie Pace.

Josie Pace is a Michigan born musical prodigy that cut her chops playing coffee shops before she decided that she wanted to take things a little darker. She is one of those artists that doesn't just write songs, she presents concepts and ideas using music, lyrics, and visuals that entice all your senses to bring you inside her world while you are listening or watching. Her voice is perfection, her style and presentation are dark and seductive and her collection of music videos is worthy of a good binge. You can check out her entire collection of music and videos by visiting her website here. We personally love the song "Battleground". We dig Josie's NIN meets Lady Gaga kind of vibe and can appreciate a strong sexy woman who isn't afraid to claim her talent and her space within this world. We can see why she was nominated for the Outstanding Alt/Indie/Punk Artist or Group at this year's awards ceremony. She has the talent and knows how to use it. She will be opening for Stabbing Westword at The Machine Shop in Flint on July 12th if you want to see her play live and in person, and you can follow her on Instagram or YouTube to stay in the loop. If she wasn't on your radar before she is now and you need to start paying attention.

The DMAs will take place at The Fillmore this Friday, April 26th. You can buy your tickets to attend the awards ceremony in person here. If you're lucky you might just see Josie and some of Detroit's other up and coming talents at the show!

Go Camping on the Dequindre Cut!

If you want to go camping sometime this summer, but you're not sure where you want to pitch your tent, look no further than Detroit! This June, the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard will host Camping on the Cut! For those that don't know, the Dequindre Cut is a walking and biking path that stretches from the Detroit Riverfront to Eastern Market. Near the end of the cut, you will find the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard, featuring shipping containers that house drinks, pop-up shops, and more. On Saturday June 1st, the Cut will also be home to 75 camp sites for the night.

Camping on the Cut is an adult only camping experience that will feature food trucks, bonfires, s'mores, a midnight bike ride, yoga, lawn games, coffee, brunch, live music and more. The live music portion is extra impressive because this event will actually be the home of this year's WhateverFest! In its ninth year, this is a new location for the fest that was previously held at venues like Trumbullplex and Tangent Gallery. Although the lineup hasn't been announced yet for this year, it is always stellar! The music portion of Camping on the Cut will take place from Noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and then after 10, only the campers are allowed.

If this sounds like a good time to you, the time to sign up is now! As we mentioned, only 75 camp sites are available, but each site is allowed to have up to 10 people. The cost is $25 per person, plus extra for brunch if you want to participate in that. To sign up for your campsite, count how many people are in your crew and click here. Although this event is a couple of months away, the campsites won't last long!

What's Up With All of Those Resale Shops on Woodward?

I drive up and down Woodward a lot. More specifically, I make the trek from Ferndale to Birmingham a few times a week for work and over the last few years, I noticed that there are a ton of resale shops every few miles during the drive. I began wondering what kind of treasures I could find inside these shops, I dreamed of discovering the perfect vintage belt in my price point or splurging on a pair of shoes that I wouldn't normally be able to afford. I figured all the people selling stuff to these shops have money, so the shops must have some really cool things inside them. Plus, I'm trying to stop buying fast fashion so buying resale fits better with my new vibe. So, after a few months of dancing around inside my fantasies, I decided to spend an afternoon making some stops.

Initially, I realized that many of the storefronts that advertised resale were closed down rental properties with old signage so there aren't actually as many shops as the drive leads you to believe. Ultimately, I was able to find a few places to stop in and search around, but I didn't buy anything on my travels. There were a few cool clothing items that I saw, but none of them were in my size and the last thing I need is more furniture or jewelry. The most shocking discovery of the day was how much-unwanted fur is rotting away on racks inside these places. If you saw it all in person, I think you would agree that fur is so 2000 and late, it's time to go faux and be done with it. Despite not finding anything, I enjoyed my adventure and plan to stop back by some of the shops from time to time to see what they have because I could see finding something special in the future. Here's a rundown of the places I stopped and what they offer.

Refined Resale: 32823 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073
Refined Resale is a small green shop on the side of Woodward Avenue. It is packed wall to wall and ceiling to floor with dresses, purses, shoes, assessors and more.  Items are mildly organized, but it's more of a dig yourself through space kinda place. They have lots of items in the $20 price range and some that go upwards of 200. It would be a great place to get a nice dress for an event and I guarantee that you could find something that you wanted if you took the time to dig, but it's not easy to move things on the racks and there is a lot to look at. The best item that I found was a purple Marc Jacobs bag that was reasonably priced, but no cheaper than you could get it on one of the resale stores online.
Everything Home Upscale Resale: 29862 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073
Everything Home is exactly what it promises. They have everything you could ever need for your home. Lots of upscale furniture, mirrors, paintings, vases, lamps, and china. Everything is laid out nicely and if you were looking for something for your home, it would be easy to walk through and spot something special. They do not carry much clothing, jewelry, or shoes at this shop, but they have a few things of this nature. I could see myself stopping in if I was looking for a special housewarming gift or if I needed a cool mirror for my home.

Emporium Resale Boutique: 33744 Woodward Ave, Birmingham, MI 48009

The Emporium was actually a pretty cool space. Everything is organized by size and category and it was super fun to walk around and see what they had. The shop carried a variety of name brand stuff ranging from mid-level to high end. The owner was friendly and immediately told me which tags were on sale when I walked into the store. I will definitely stop in once in a while to see what she has because she clearly cares about what she is doing and try to find nice things to resale into a new home at a fair price.

Regeneration: 23700 Woodward Ave, Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069

I know that a lot of you probably have been to Regeneration before, but I wanted to remind you how cool of a store it really is. All of their stock tends to be seasonal and their prices are more than reasonable. They carry mid-level and vintage fashion and their stock is constantly changing. I usually buy something every time I visit so it was a surprise when I didn't find anything this time around.  This is the spot I am most likely to return to if I am looking for a deal, but not the spot I would stop at if I was looking for some high-end vintage finds.

PS- They also have a second location in Clawson.

Passion Fashion: Next to the Affordable Flowers located at 33289 Woodward Ave, Birmingham, MI 48009
This was my favorite store by far. I spent some time chatting with an older gentleman named Len who told me that they had just moved into the space and they would be getting a lot more merchandise soon. They didn't have much on the shelves, but what they did have was nice. Most of their merchandise was older high-end stuff. If you were looking for a vintage St. Johns suit, this would be the place to go. Plus, Len was awesome to talk to, so I suggest stopping in if you want to have an adventure and meet a new friend.

Record Store Day 2019 is this Saturday, April 13th and there's no doubt that there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of music enthusiasts lined up outside of all of the stores around town. Some will be trying to get their paws on this year's RSD exclusives, while others are there just to take advantage of the sales that most stores are having. To make your Record Store Day a little easier, we made a list of some of the best stores around Metro Detroit and what they will be offering. Some will have live music, some will have great deals, and some will have free food. Decide for yourself which stores have the most to offer.

Win Tickets to See We Came As Romans at St. Andrew's Hall

Very few bands have had the highs and lows that Troy, Michigan's We Came As Romans have had. Over the last ten years, they released five albums, 20 + music videos, and toured the world. Then, in 2018, they lost keyboardist and back-up vocalist Kyle Pavone and decided to take a step back before going hard in 2019. They kicked off a co-headlining tour with Crown The Empire that will be making a hometown visit to play St. Andrew's alongside Shvpes and ERRA on Sunday, April 14th. Tickets to attend the show are $25 to $45 in advance and they can be purchased here.

You can also enter to win a pair of tickets to the show by emailing your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #WCAR. We will draw one lucky winner and they will get to attend the show with a friend for free.
