Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra once said, "All sorrows are less with bread.” Turns out that even in the 16th century they knew that good bread is where it's at. Ochre, a new bakery in Detroit, also shares an appreciation for good bread, so they built their entire menu around it.
Max Leonard is a bread baking master who honed his craft in his home kitchen before teaming up with Jessica Hicks and Dai Hughes from Astro Coffee to open Ochre Bakery this past April. The concept was to create a simple menu that features locally sourced seasonal recipes that showcase Max's naturally leavened heritage grain bread. The result is an amazing cafe/restaurant that was named one of the ten best in 2019 by Bon Appetit magazine!
Ochre's breakfast menu features toasts, breakfast sandwiches, eggs, dips, and yogurts while their lunch menu features sandwiches, pitas and a different selection of dips. They also have a wide selection of vegan items, including baked goods and sweets. Their vegan Lemon-Pistachio Loaf has been making quite a name for itself. Their menu changes seasonally and features fresh locally sourced ingredients whenever they can. You can stop into the cafe to grab a coffee, a loaf of bread, and a pastry to go or you can stay and have a seat to enjoy some extra friendly sit down service.
Ochre is located at 4884 Grand River Avenue. They are open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, but the kitchen closes at 3 p.m.
