When I was a kid, my parents would stop by our local bakery every Sunday to pick up a fresh loaf of bread for family dinner. On special occasions, we would spend a little more time at the shop sampling the desserts before buying a few delectable delights to enjoy after our epic Sunday meal. There is nothing that compares to the taste of fresh bread and just baked desserts, but there are not as many bakeries as there used to be. Big box stores and generic in-house bakers have replaced corner bakeries, but they are simply not as good. If you make the drive to Ochre, Red Hook, Avalon or Clawson's newest patisserie White Wolf, you will know what we are talking about.
White Wolf is a new cafe in Clawson Michigan that serves traditional French and Italian pastries, bread, cakes, coffee, and tea with a Japanese twist. Chef Doran Brooks puts his unique spin on Mont Blanc, Tiramisu, Chocolate Chiffon, French Macaroons, Fresh Fruit Tarts, Matcha Cheesecake, Chocolate Pot de Creme, Swiss Matcha Roll, Pannacotta, and Yuzu Meringue Tarts.
The cafe also serves up some savory breakfast sandwiches and a variety of bread, including croissants, danishes, and sourdoughs. Many of these items are created using traditional “Kashi” dough, a centuries-old method for baking from Japan. Everything looks as good as it tastes and most importantly, you can re-live my favorite childhood experience of picking out a few special treats and some fresh bread whenever you visit. White Wolf also features a variety of coffees and lattes that are made using beans sourced from local Michigan roasters. They also always have a few vegan options on their shelves and all of their lattes can be made with almond milk if you are trying to avoid dairy. They also have a lot of places to sit down and relax and free wi-fi if you need to log on for a little while when you visit.
