Two New Exhibits Coming to the DIA

When someone asks us what they should do when they visit Detroit we always suggest a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts. With over 100 galleries and a vast collection that includes Thomas Cole, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Vincent van Gogh, the DIA boasts one of the most significant collections of any museum in the world. On top of that, there is usually something new coming to the DIA for a temporary visit which means that there is always a reason to return to take it all in. Over the next few weeks, there are a few new exhibits that will be opening and one that will be closing its door, so plan your next visit accordingly!

Opening:

Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos 2021

Runs From: Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 - Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021

"The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate of Detroit and the Southwest Detroit Business Association, will display 12 ofrenda altars, or offerings, created by local artists from Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 — Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, in celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), which honors the life and memory of lost loved ones. This year’s display, “Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos,” marks the ninth consecutive year of the popular program."

27 artists submitted proposals and 9 were chosen to build an ofrenda. Some artists honored a personal loss and others memorialized a communal loss.

Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite

Runs From: Friday, Oct. 8, 2021 - Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022

"In this exhibition are over forty large-scale color and black-and-white photographs by Kwame Brathwaite. His work helped advance one of the most influential cultural movements of the 1960s, "Black Is Beautiful," when black women and men turned to natural hairstyles and African-inspired clothing.

Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite is the first major exhibition dedicated to Brathwaite, a vital figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. Inspired by activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey's writings, Brathwaite, along with his older brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models.

AJASS was a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers. Grandassa Models - the subject of much of the exhibition's contents - was a modeling agency for black women, founded to challenge white beauty standards. The exhibition includes documentary photographs of stunning studio portraits, fashion work, to behind-the-scenes images of Harlem's artistic and jazz community, including Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. It offers a long-overdue exploration of Brathwaite's life and work."

Closing:

Experience & Expression

Closing: Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021

"To create the art of our time, artists often draw on their own experiences of the world—from the personal to the political, from the aesthetic to the commercial, from the individual to the collective, from the spiritual to the material.

This installation has been divided into three sections, which explore the use of abstraction and figuration; the experimentation with traditional and novel materials; and the definition of self and others. All of these works invite you to look closely, to ask questions, and to connect with your experiences."

To Visit the DIA:

You must make a reservation to visit, click here to do that.

General admission is always free for residents of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties.

Masks are required for all guests at all times regardless of vaccination status.

Hours are reduced to allow for additional cleaning each week. The DIA is open for members only 9 a.m.–12 p.m. on Wednesday; reservations are required.

Reservations are available for all visitors from 12 p.m.–4 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

DIY Street Fair Returns to Downtown Ferndale this Weekend

DIY Street Fair is special. Upon first glance, it might appear to be another outdoor festival that features a few vendors. some music, and food, but even though it has the same ingredients as a lot of other local gatherings, it has its own unique energy and flavor.

DIY is created by and for the community. For three magical days, 9 Mile and Troy street are shut down so everyone can come out to see what their neighbors have been making, cooking, and practicing to perform in front of a crowd. The event features great locally brewed beers, opportunities to support your favorite local charities, and there is always at least one place to buy an elephant ear or an ice cream.

DIY will be a little different this year, but we think that's a good thing. They have moved the stage towards the library to give everyone some room to spread out and they have selected the perfect mix of old and new vendors to make sure that there is something interesting for everyone that attends. They have also gotten rid of the ticket system so that getting a drink will be simple and easy!

DIY Street Fair will take place this weekend from 6 p.m. - Midnight Friday, September 24th, 11 a.m.-Midnight on Saturday, September 25th and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 26th.

This year's musical acts are as follows:

FRIDAY  9/24

7:30   DUENDE

8:45   THE BEGGARS

10:00  THE MUGGS

SATURDAY  9/25

5:30   THE MYTHICS

6:45   WHITE BEE

SUNDAY  9/26

4:45   GOLD CRAYON

6:00   MAC SATURN

Parking should also be a little easier this year thanks to The Dot. Sure, it's on the other side of Woodward, but so is the Funky Ferndale Art Fair and we suggest you plan to walk through both events if you make the trek to Downtown Ferndale! Don't forget, many of Downtown Ferndale's stores and restaurants will also be open and running specials and events throughout the weekend. The whole community goes out of their way to make this event extra special.

Calling All Makers: Apply For the Detroit Urban Craft Fair

During the lockdown, we saw a lot of new people crafting and creating. We also saw a lot of these people turn that new hobby into a new business. So, we wanted to tell all the Midwest makers about one of the best places to sell your handmade items this holiday season. The Detroit Urban Craft Fair is the place to shop local this holiday season and if you make and sell something cool, you still have time to sign up to be a part of the show!

The 2021 Detroit Urban Craft Fair will be a hybrid event with an in-person and virtual component so that everyone can access handmade for the holidays. This is one of the most well-attended events of the season and most of the vendors report record-high sales after the three day event. The best part about this show is that all of the makers are required to be present at their tables. So, you can ask questions and find out about all the cool things that you are buying, which makes those gifts extra special. It's just as fun for the makers as it is for the shoppers and most people come ready to buy.

Applying for Detroit Urban Craft Fair is easy. All you need to do is fill out this form on their website.
Before you log in to do so, get 5 good photos of your work, and think up a clever little pitch that tells the jury why you should be a part of the show. It's low cost to apply, but it is also competitive, so you want to make sure that your work stands out and is seen when they are making the final cut. Each year the DUCF features approximately 105 vendors and they try to take five to seven vendors from each category. They encourage people to showcase new items, unique items, and to show them something they haven't seen before.  They also make sure to include new vendors every year and they accept people that have applied and been turned down in the past. So, if you want a shot, be as creative as you are with your crafting and you will have the highest chance of getting in.

To learn more about the Detroit Urban Craft Fair visit their website or follow them on Instagram or Facebook.

For everyone else; mark your calendars, DUCF 2021 will take place December 3-5th at The Masonic Temple

Three Cats Café is a lunch/brunch/dinner space that specializes in seasonal small plates, cocktails, wines, and desserts. They have a variety of options, including vegan and gluten-free, and their menu changes seasonally. You can have a cocktail at the bar, enjoy some snacks in the café, have a full dinner with a friend, or relax and enjoy a meal out on their gorgeous patio. You can even order online to get something to-go.

They are open for lunch from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tuesday - Friday. They are open for dinner 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. They are open for dinner until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and they serve brunch from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. You can also reserve a table here.

Follow Three Cats on Facebook or Instagram to keep up with their seasonal menu and make sure you stop into Leon and Lulu next door, it's one of our favorite places to shop local for home goods or a gift and it is owned by the same people, so it has the same great vibes.
