When someone asks us what they should do when they visit Detroit we always suggest a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts. With over 100 galleries and a vast collection that includes Thomas Cole, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Vincent van Gogh, the DIA boasts one of the most significant collections of any museum in the world. On top of that, there is usually something new coming to the DIA for a temporary visit which means that there is always a reason to return to take it all in. Over the next few weeks, there are a few new exhibits that will be opening and one that will be closing its door, so plan your next visit accordingly!
Opening:

This year’s display, “Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos,” marks the ninth consecutive year of the popular program."
27 artists submitted proposals and 9 were chosen to build an ofrenda. Some artists honored a personal loss and others memorialized a communal loss.

Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite is the first major exhibition dedicated to Brathwaite, a vital figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. Inspired by activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey's writings, Brathwaite, along with his older brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models.Closing:

Three Cats is also home to some of Theatre Bizzare's most memorable décor in the off-season. We immediately felt like we were at home in the space and when we realized that Zombo was there in spirit, we knew why.
Follow Three Cats on Facebook or Instagram to keep up with their seasonal menu and make sure you stop into Leon and Lulu next door, it's one of our favorite places to shop local for home goods or a gift and it is owned by the same people, so it has the same great vibes.

Friday, September 3rd - Monday, September 6th - Arts, Beats & Eats: Maybe we're getting older or maybe the lineup is actually getting better, but this year is one of the first times that Arts, Beats & Eats is on our list of things you might want to check out. The Crofoot helped with some of the booking this year, so there are some great national acts on the bill, like Rise Against, Neon Trees, The Guess Who, and Stone Temple Pilots. Some of the great local acts playing include Summer Like the Season, Jackson & The Poolsharks, Sara Marie Barron, Detroit Riddim Crew, and Bill Grogan's Goat. Check out the full music schedule here. Of course, there are also arts to look at and eats to eat, hence the name Arts, Beats & Eats. On Friday the festival is free to enter until 5 p.m., after 5 p.m. the price is $10. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, admission is $5 before 3 p.m. and $10 after 3 p.m. Admission is free for kids under 3 and for veterans and active military. For more info, click here. Also, the first 5,000 people at the festival get a $10 gift card to use at participating retail shops in Downtown Royal Oak. So, that's a nice gesture.
