Eat Mr. Dips

The next time you are in the mood for a burger and fries, you should try Mr.Dips. What once began as a food truck in NYC has grown to a multi-location brick-and-mortar restaurant that serves up your favorite fast-food staples with a twist. Their menu is simple and small, but full of flavor with a unique approach that you won't find at any other "fast food" restaurant. Their burgers come with a variety of special sauces, their fries are waffle style and can be fully loaded with queso and scallions, and their shakes and soft-serve ice cream cones are frosty with an ever-changing list of flavors. Our favorite extra touch was the sprouts on the Impossible burger, it added the perfect little bit of crunch and made the meal memorable.

The Detroit Mr. Dips is located Downtown in the alley by the Shinola Hotel. They are currently open from 12 p.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday - Thursday and 12 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. You can eat there or order something online for pickup or delivery here. Follow them on Instagram to stay up to date on their season flavors and offerings.

Donate to the Detroiters Annual Christmas Present Toy Drive

If you're feeling generous and want to make the holidays a little better for fellow Detroiters, three great organizations have a way that you can help. Detroiters Helping Each Other, Detroit No Good Girls, and Southwest Alano Club have come together this year to hold the Detroiters Annual Christmas Present Toy Drive. The groups have a goal to collect at least 700 gifts this year, last year they were able to give over 1,500 gifts. The gifts will be given to kids of all ages, from babies to teenagers up to 18 years old. Gifts can be as big or as small as you can afford, and Detroiters Helping Each Other even has the great suggestion of shopping at Five Below so you can get more bang for your buck.

If you'd like to help out in another way, you can also make a monetary donation to the toy drive. The group plans to do a live video when they do their big Christmas shopping trips and will even send you photos of the receipts if you donate. So, you can see what your money helped buy. You Have to Try the Cauliflower Wings from Pumachug in Downtown Clawson

Four years ago I fell in love with cauliflower wings. They are tasty, they are usually vegan, and they are the perfect appetizer to split with someone. Eventually, this love affair became an obsession which turned into a full-on quest to find and try as many different types of cauliflower wings as I could. I have discovered that every restaurant has its own way to cook cauliflower and a unique sauce to dip it into. Some spots slather it in the sauce while it's cooking and others wait until it's coming out of the oven to give it some zip. Some restaurants cut the cauliflower into little pieces and others serve it up in large chunks that look a lot like traditional wings. These little touches can make or break the wings.  Personally, I want something mid-size. super crispy, with an interesting sauce that I can't find anywhere else, and that is exactly what I found at Pumachug.
Pumachug is a scratch kitchen in the heart of downtown Clawson. They have a unique menu that features bar and grill staples like salads, burgers, and fries alongside a FULL vegan menu, including brunch and appetizer options. They also have an extensive menu of craft cocktails and a LARGE beer list with some unique choices that you won't find at other places in town. But. their wings are what brought me in the door. I was told that they were some of the best in town and they did not disappoint.  They were mid to large size, very crispy, and had a unique sauce that you can't find anywhere else. It wasn't too tangy or too sweet, it was "just right" as Goldie Locks would say. It was also the biggest portion of wings we have ever gotten. In fact, all the portions at Pumachug were very generous, which meant I got to enjoy the wings and the rice bowl I ordered during two separate meals. I feel like the only thing better than enjoying a great meal is getting to revisit it later that night or the next day!
Pumachug is located at 1 E. 14 Mile Rd Clawson, MI. They are currently open 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Tuesday - Thursday, 11:30 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Sundays, and they are closed Mondays. To learn more about Pumachug follow them on IG, Facebook, or visit their website and place an order to see how good it is for yourself! We highly suggest that you try the wings!

Profs & Pints Has Landed in Detroit

Did you enjoy school, specifically college? I know we all hated the hours, the homework, and the general education classes that we didn't want to take, but when you had a good professor who knew their stuff and was passionate about teaching, did you find yourself interested in whatever they were sharing? Personally, I loved the lectures, especially when the professor was clearly passionate about what they were talking about. I would learn more in two hours than I could from any book and I would retain the information much longer when it was taught to me in this fashion. Throughout history, humans used storytelling to pass down knowledge and history from generation to generation. Philosophers would travel to share their knowledge and to hear other theorists share their views and findings. Learning from each other is what has kept us alive. These days, sharing knowledge usually comes with a hefty price and a lot of tests. But, thanks to a new to Detroit event called Profs & Pints, knowledge is a shared entity that anyone can afford!

Profs & Pints was created by Peter Schmidt, a Detroit area native who spent nearly 30 years as an education journalist before establishing Profs & Pints in Washington D.C. in October 2017. He says: "As a newspaper reporter and editor focused on education, I knew that tuitions are out of reach for many and that far too few people in Michigan and elsewhere have access to college. Moreover, many of those who do enroll end up neglecting academic disciplines they’re passionate about because they feel financially pressured to earn degrees in more-lucrative fields to ensure they can pay off student loans.” Schmidt added: “Profs and Pints offers people a chance to learn about a host of disciplines offering knowledge that greatly enriches life, such as history, literature, philosophy, and cultural studies. With no tuition for them to pay, no tests for them to take, and no grades on the line, it also offers a risk-free opportunity to learn about subjects that may seem intimidating, such as astronomy or nuclear physics." Detroit hosted its inaugural event last month at Planet Ant and everyone who came out loved it, so they are doing it again this month.

Profs & Pints will be returning to Planet Ant on Sunday, Novemeber 21st at 6:30 p.m. This month's topic is the Occult Origins of Science "a look at how alchemy, astrology, and magic helped shape the modern scientific method, with Eric H. Ash, professor of history at Wayne State University and scholar of the development of science and technology in the Renaissance era." Tickets are $12 per person in advance and they can be purchased here. You can grab a pint at Ghost Light bar (attached to Ant Hall) and relax and sip away while you learn. Please note, Planet Ant requires proof of vaccination and a mask to attend all their live events. You can learn more about Pints and Profs here, and you can follow them on Facebook to find out about future events.

Knowledge is power and they are sharing it!

Sneak Peek of this month's lesson:

A 1700 reproduction of a scroll named for the famous 14th-century English alchemist George Ripley depicts alchemists revealing secrets from the Biblical Book of the Seven Seals.
