BAF was conceived as a response to the cancellation of many summer art festivals during the pandemic. Organized by local artists Kelly Kaatz of Kelly Kaatz Ceramics and Carey Gustafson of Glass Action, the fair has quickly become a highlight of the artistic calendar in the area.
One of the key features of BAF is its decentralized setup, with attendees encouraged to walk, bike, scooter, or skateboard between host houses to discover new artists and enjoy the neighborhoods of Oak Park and Ferndale. The route spans from 8 Mile to 10 Mile and Scotia to Hilton, ensuring that there's plenty to see and do for art enthusiasts of all ages.
For those planning to attend, the BAF yard signs and Maphlet (map/pamphlet) located at each host house will help navigate the event. In case of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for Sunday, May 19th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Backyard Art Fair promises to be a day filled with art, community, and creativity, offering a unique opportunity to connect with local artists and discover new talent in the area.
