After two years of meticulous restoration, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle is finally open to the public—and it’s more breathtaking than ever! Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a serene escape, this iconic gem is ready to welcome you back.
Getting to Belle Isle: What You Need to Know
Belle Isle Park is open year-round from 5 AM to 10 PM, with facility hours varying:
Conservatory: Wednesday–Sunday, 10 AM–5 PM
Aquarium: Friday–Sunday, 10 AM–4 PM
Nature Center: Open daily, 10 AM–5 PM
Dossin Great Lakes Museum: Friday–Saturday, 10 AM–5 PM, and Sunday, 1 PM–5 PM
While pedestrians and cyclists can explore Belle Isle for free, drivers will need a Michigan Recreation Passport to access the island by car.
A Historic Detroit Gem
Designed by famed architect Albert Kahn and opened in 1904, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is one of the oldest continually operating conservatories in the United States. Spanning 13 lush acres, it’s a place where history and nature intertwine seamlessly.
Over the past two years, the conservatory has undergone an impressive transformation, including:
✨ Over 1,500 glass panes replaced for crystal-clear views
✨ Upgraded irrigation systems to keep the flora thriving
✨ Restored limestone, dome panels, and planter walls
✨ New concrete floors and catwalks (perfect for Pavo, the conservatory’s resident cat 🐈)
The renovations have also brought a fresh vibrancy to the Cactus and Tropical Houses, where brand-new glass enhances the natural beauty of these rooms.
What to Explore
Step inside and immerse yourself in five distinct rooms, each offering its own magical atmosphere:
🌴 Palm House – Towering palms and exotic greenery
🌵 Cactus House – A desert escape in the heart of Detroit
🌱 Tropical Exhibits – Lush plants from faraway jungles
🌿 Fernery – A cool, shaded retreat with delicate ferns
🌺 Show House – Seasonal floral displays that dazzle
Don’t miss the rare orchid collection, gifted by Anna Scripps Whitcomb herself in 1955. With over 600 orchids, it’s the largest municipally owned collection in the country!
Outside the conservatory, stroll through formal gardens, admire the koi pond, and soak in the peaceful surroundings. (it's frozen right now)
Plan Your Visit
Admission to the conservatory is free and available Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM–5 PM. Whether you’re planning a romantic date, snapping photos with friends, or enjoying a family outing, this tropical oasis is the perfect getaway.
Experience the magic of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and see why it’s been a cherished Detroit treasure for over a century. 🌿
Pro Tip: Make it a full day on Belle Isle by visiting the nearby Belle Isle Aquarium and Nature Center!

We’re here to tell you: leave those worries at the door. Selden Standard is a gem for everyone—including vegans. We recently dined there with a group of friends, and not only was it easy to eat vegan, but it was also a meal to remember.
The experience started with outstanding service. After making a reservation, we reached out to let them know about our dietary preferences. When we arrived, our server had already prepared a custom menu with substitutions, making it simple to discuss and decide what to order with the group. The attention to detail was incredible, and it set the tone for the night.
We kicked things off with some refreshing mocktails, and from there, every dish we shared was better than the last. Selden’s seasonal menu is a reflection of fresh, creative, and thoughtfully crafted dishes, and they delivered on every single plate. The flavors, presentation, and quality were top-notch, and our friends—vegan and non-vegan alike—loved every bite.
With a rotating menu that adapts to the seasons and service that goes above and beyond, Selden Standard has officially won us over. It’s proof that everyone, regardless of dietary preference, can enjoy an unforgettable meal here.
If you’ve been hesitant about dining at Selden as a vegan, don’t be. Make the reservation, bring your crew, and get ready to savor one of Detroit’s best dining experiences.

Detroit is alive with art, culture, and innovation, and no one captures the city's energy quite like Tiff Massey. We recently spent an inspiring afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), catching up with a friend over coffee in the museum café before exploring Massey’s new gallery, 7 Mile + Livernois. Let us tell you—this exhibit is a must-see.
Massey, a celebrated Detroit-based artist and metalsmith, takes jewelry to monumental heights. Her installations and wearable sculptures merge West African and Black American culture with Detroit’s iconic style. In 7 Mile + Livernois, Massey transforms the history and soul of her childhood neighborhood into powerful, large-scale sculptures that feel as bold as the city itself.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Massey or discovering her for the first time, make time to visit this extraordinary exhibition. Bring a friend, grab a coffee, and immerse yourself in the brilliance of one of Detroit’s most groundbreaking artists.
Currently on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts. For more details, visit DIA.org.
